A replacement EV charging cable is a direct swap for a damaged, worn-out or lost tethered wallbox cable, or a portable Mode 3 cable that's reached the end of its useful life. Every cable on this page is matched in spec to the original — so the replacement plugs into the same wallbox, charges the same car at the same speed, with no install changes.
When to replace vs repair
EV cables fail in three common ways:
- Connector pin damage — pins bent or burnt from a poor connection or kerb damage. Replace the cable. Pin replacement is technically possible but rarely cost-effective.
- Jacket damage — cuts, abrasions, exposed conductor. Replace. Repaired jacket is unsafe under BS 7671.
- Connector body cracked or rubber boot perished — water ingress likely. Replace if more than a hairline crack.
- Couplings worn — slack fit on the car — sometimes fixable with new pin retention, more often replace.
- Cable hot to the touch in use — internal conductor failing, fire risk. Replace immediately.
Tethered wallbox cables — what to specify
Tethered wallbox cables are part of the wallbox, not separately replaceable in most cases. To replace one, you typically:
- Confirm the wallbox brand and model.
- Get the manufacturer's replacement tether kit — typically £100-200 + £150-250 install labour.
- Swap by a qualified electrician.
Some wallboxes (Andersen, Pod Point Solo 3) have user-replaceable tethers. Others (cheaper own-brand units) require a full wallbox replacement when the cable fails.
Portable / standalone cable replacement
For socketed wallboxes (Easee, Ohme ePod, Pod Point Solo 3 untethered, Hypervolt Home 3 untethered), the cable is a separate item. To replace:
- Match the connector type — Type 2 to Type 2 for almost all modern UK EVs.
- Match the current rating — 32A single-phase (7.4kW) or 32A three-phase (22kW). 16A variants for older PHEVs.
- Pick a length — typically the same as the original, or slightly longer if you've moved the wallbox or added parking depth.

Granny charger replacement
A granny charger (Mode 2 portable) is a complete unit — cable + in-cable control box + connector. Replace as a single unit. See granny charger range. Match the connector (Type 1 for older Leafs/Outlander PHEV Mk1, Type 2 for everything else) and the current rating (10A for 2.3kW, 13A or 16A for 3.6kW).
Common compatibility issues
- Older Tesla cables — pre-2019 Tesla wallbox tethers have a Tesla-specific Type 2 with built-in DC pins. Modern UK Type 2 cables fit but won't deliver the same DC capability. For pre-2019 Tesla Wall Connector replacement, contact Tesla directly.
- Smart-cable replacement — some smart cables (with built-in displays or RFID) need a brand-specific replacement to maintain features. Check the model.
- 3-phase cable on single-phase wallbox — works, throttles to single-phase. Single-phase cable on three-phase wallbox — works, throttles to single-phase.
Why your cable might have failed
Common UK failure causes:
- Kerbside damage — connector dropped on tarmac, pins bent. £80-200 cable, gone.
- Vehicle drove over cable — rare but happens, particularly in shared driveways. Cable jacket cut.
- Persistent UV / weather — cheap rubber-jacketed cables fail in 3-5 winters. Halogen-free woven jackets last 5-10× longer.
- Pin corrosion — unmaintained connectors in coastal locations, or cables stored damp. Specialist contact cleaner annually prevents this.
- Animal damage — squirrels and rats occasionally chew exposed cables. Squirrel-proof routing helps.
