New to EVs?

Which cable do I need?

A 60-second crash course in the only three decisions that actually matter.

01

Type 1 or Type 2?

Almost every car sold in the UK after 2018 is Type 2. Type 1 is mostly older Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and a few imports. If you bought your car new, you're Type 2.

02

Tethered or untethered wallbox?

Tethered = the cable is permanently attached to your wallbox — you don't need a separate cable. Untethered (socketed) = you plug your own cable in. Most cable shoppers fall into the untethered camp, or charge at public AC posts which always need your own cable.

03

5m, 7m or 10m?

Most driveways are fine with 5m. Pick 7m if your wallbox is at the back of the drive, or your car's charge port is on the opposite side. 10m is for street parking or awkward layouts. Don't go bigger than you need — they're heavier and pricier.

FAQs

Frequently asked

Use our 30-second car-picker at the top of the page, or message us with your make and model. We'll tell you straight.

Type 2 is the UK and European standard for any EV sold new since 2018. Type 1 is mostly older Japanese imports — Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, early i-MiEVs. If your car was bought new in the UK in the last six or seven years, you're Type 2.

5m suits most home setups. Pick 7m if your charger's at the back of the drive, or your charge port is on the opposite side of the car. 10m is for on-street charging or awkward layouts. Bigger isn't better — longer cables are heavier and cost more.

A single-phase 32A Type 2 cable charges at up to 7.4 kW — about 25 to 30 miles of range per hour, depending on your car. Three-phase 22kW cables can do up to 90 miles per hour, but only if your house has three-phase power and your car can accept it (most can't).

Yes. Every cable we sell is rated IP55 or better — rain, snow and wash-downs are fine. Don't submerge it.

If your wallbox is tethered, the cable comes attached — you don't need a separate one. If it's untethered (a Type 2 socket on the wall) you bring your own cable to plug in each time. Most of our customers have untethered wallboxes or charge at public AC posts, both of which need a separate cable.

Yes — Mode 3 Type 2 cables are an open standard (IEC 62196-2). Any cable from us will work with any UK or European wallbox: Ohme, Hypervolt, MyEnergi, Pod Point, Easee, Andersen, Wallbox, you name it. There's no brand lock-in.

30 days, no questions, on any unused cable. We pay return postage on faulty items.
