Choosing the right cable for your Aston Martin

Aston Martin's plug-in models are produced in very small numbers, and that shapes ownership more than any specification does. The charging side, at least, is entirely ordinary.

Connector spec

  • Valhalla and other plug-in models: Type 2. Small plug-in hybrid battery with a modest onboard AC charger.

A standard connector on a rare car

Whatever else is bespoke about an Aston, the charge inlet is not. It is the same Type 2 socket fitted to a Volkswagen, and it is governed by an industry standard rather than a manufacturer's design. That means the one part of the car with a genuinely deep, competitive supply chain is the charging cable.

Low volume means thin parts stock

A dealer holding parts for a handful of cars will not necessarily have a replacement lead on a shelf, and ordering one can take time. On a component that is standardised across the entire industry, waiting for a branded part is an avoidable delay.

The battery is small

Plug-in hybrid packs in this class fill in a couple of hours on any lead. The 16amp cable is sufficient and the 22kW three-phase version has nothing to offer. Choose on length and build quality instead of rating.

Cars that are stored, not commuted

These are vehicles that sit for long periods. Leaving a cable permanently connected at the wall makes it more likely the car goes back on charge after a run, which matters more for battery condition than charging speed ever will.

Length recommendations

Measure the route through the garage rather than the straight line. 10m is a safer default. Compare across our Type 2 charging cables.

What we stock for Aston Martin

  • Type 2 to Type 2 cables from 5m to 20m, with 3.6kW the relevant rating.
  • Type 2 to 3-pin Mode 2 leads for garage and household sockets.

Questions

What cable does an Aston Martin plug-in need?
A Type 2 lead. The 16amp single-phase cable is sufficient for a plug-in hybrid battery of this size.
Is there an Aston Martin specific cable?
No. The inlet is the industry-standard Type 2 socket, the same as on a Volkswagen. Any quality Type 2 lead is the correct part.
Why not buy through the dealer?
You can, but production volumes are low enough that a replacement may not be in stock. The cable is a standardised component with a deep supply chain elsewhere.
Is the three-phase cable worth buying?
No. A plug-in hybrid battery of this size cannot use it.
Should I leave the car plugged in?
On a car that sits for long periods, leaving the lead connected at the wall makes it more likely to go back on charge, which is better for battery condition.
