Mazda's plug-in range is small and slightly unusual, and one of its cars does something no other manufacturer on this site offers. Worth knowing before you buy anything.

The MX-30 R-EV can supply mains power without a discharge cable

The rotary range-extender version of the MX-30 provides mains power from a socket built into the vehicle. Where most cars need a vehicle-to-load discharge lead to run appliances, the R-EV does it natively. If that is what you were shopping for, you already have it and need buy nothing.

Nothing in the range needs more than a 32amp lead

The highest onboard charger across every Mazda plug-in is 7.2kW, which a 32amp single-phase cable supplies in full. The 22kW three-phase lead has no application here at all: no Mazda can draw it, so it would be money spent on capacity the car ignores.

The electric MX-30 has a small battery and a slow charger

35.5kWh at 6.6kW is around five and a half hours from empty, so it is an easy overnight car. The short range means most owners charge frequently and briefly rather than deeply, which makes cable convenience matter more than cable speed. A lead that reaches without being dragged is worth more here than a rating the car cannot use.

Length recommendations

10m covers most driveways. The MX-30's rear-hinged doors mean owners often park with a bit more clearance than usual, which can put the car further from the wall than expected. Compare across our Type 2 charging cables.

Does the Mazda MX-30 R-EV need a V2L cable?
No. The R-EV supplies mains power from a socket built into the vehicle, so it does the job natively without a discharge lead.

Is the 22kW three-phase cable worth buying?
