Choosing the right cable for your Honda

Honda's electric story in Britain has been short and interrupted. The Honda e was discontinued after three years, which means a good share of the people buying a cable for one are second or third owners of a car whose original lead is long gone.

Replacing a lost Honda e cable

Discontinued does not mean orphaned. The Honda e uses the standard Type 2 connector, so a replacement is an ordinary purchase rather than a hunt for a discontinued part. A 32amp single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 lead is the correct everyday cable and costs considerably less than a dealer part, where one is even still listed.

The e:Ny1 is the one with a real battery

At 68.8kWh and 11kW onboard, the e:Ny1 will use everything a single-phase home supply offers. Around ten hours from empty at 7.4kW. It is an overnight car, and the 32amp lead is the right rating.

The Honda e was never a long-range car

35.5kWh at 6.6kW is a little over five hours. Combined with the short range, most owners charge often and briefly. That makes a cable that reaches easily worth more than a fast one, and a 3-pin lead is a genuinely useful backup on a battery this small.

Length recommendations

The Honda e's charge port sits in the centre of the bonnet, which is unusual and means the car is normally nose-in to the wallbox. 5m often suffices. The e:Ny1 uses a conventional wing position, where 10m is the safer default. Compare across our Type 2 charging cables.
