A handful of early VW plug-ins used Type 1, so check the port shape if your car predates the ID range. Choosing the right cable for your Volkswagen

Volkswagen's UK EV range is dominated by the ID family, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID. Buzz: built on the MEB platform shared with Audi, Skoda and Cupra. Every modern VW EV uses Type 2 AC and CCS Combo 2 DC. The 2026 facelift adds V2L on selected ID.4 and ID.5 trims.

  • ID.3 (2020+): Type 2 AC + CCS DC. 11kW AC max.
  • ID.4 (2021+): Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L on 2026 refresh.
  • ID.5 (2022+): Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L from 2026.
  • ID.7 (2023+): Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC.
  • ID. Buzz (2023+): Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L on GTX trim.
  • e-Golf (2014-2020): Type 2 AC + CCS DC. 7.4kW AC max.
  • Golf GTE / Passat GTE / Touareg PHEV: Type 2 AC, 3.6kW max (single-phase 16A).

AC charging speed

Every modern VW EV (ID family) accepts 11kW AC max, same as BMW, Audi and Mercedes. So a UK three-phase home wallbox at 11kW charges a 77kWh ID.4 from 10-100% in about 7 hours, vs 11 hours on a single-phase 7kW wallbox.

The PHEV models (Golf GTE, Passat GTE) cap at 3.6kW (16A single-phase), go with a 3.6kW cable. Anything higher just throttles to 3.6kW anyway.

The 2026 V2L update

VW's 2026 software refresh adds V2L (vehicle-to-load) to selected ID.4, ID.5 and ID. Buzz GTX trims. Output is 3.6kW from the Type 2 charge port, same as Hyundai/Kia spec. Compatible with our V2L adapter range. Worth confirming with your VW dealer that your specific model year and trim has V2L enabled in software before buying an adapter.

Length recommendations for VW

VW charge ports are at the rear-right on most ID models. Match the cable to your driveway:

  • 5m: wallbox close, parking on the driver's side.
  • 7.5-10m: typical UK driveway with the wallbox on a garage wall, parking direction varies.
  • 15m+: long driveways or shared.

Smart-tariff integration

VW Connect (the in-car app) supports basic charge scheduling but is less polished than the third-party wallbox apps. For Octopus Intelligent or similar dynamic tariffs, pair your VW with a smart wallbox like Ohme or Hypervolt. They handle the dynamic pricing logic better than the car's own scheduler.

Will this cable work with my Volkswagen?
Every current UK Volkswagen EV uses Type 2 (Mode 3). Older Volkswagen hybrids or pre-2018 EVs may use Type 1, check your charge port: hexagonal 7-pin = Type 2, square 5-pin = Type 1.
What length cable should I get for my Volkswagen?
10m suits most UK home setups. 5m if your wallbox is right next to where you park. 15-25m for awkward driveway layouts.
What rating? 7kW or 22kW?
Match to your wallbox. UK home wallboxes are mostly 7kW (32A single-phase). 22kW only relevant if you have a three-phase supply.
