Choosing the right cable for your LEVC

The LEVC TX is the electric London taxi, and it is charged harder than almost any private car. A cab plugs in daily, often twice, frequently at a public rapid point and then again at home. That duty cycle is what should drive the purchase.

Connector spec by model

  • TX (2018+): Type 2 + CCS. 22kW AC on later builds, 7.4kW on earlier ones. 31kWh battery with a petrol range extender. 50kW DC.
  • VN5 van (2020+): Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW or 22kW AC. 31kWh with range extender.

The range extender changes the arithmetic

Unlike a full EV, the TX carries a small 31kWh battery and a petrol generator. You are not charging to cover the day's mileage, you are charging to keep the cheap electric miles topped up. That means short, frequent charges rather than one long overnight one, and it makes cable convenience matter more than capacity.

Later cabs can genuinely use a 22kW lead

An LEVC with the 22kW onboard charger is one of the few vehicles in Britain that can exploit a three-phase public AC post, and on a 31kWh battery that means a meaningful top-up in well under an hour. If you work from a rank or depot with three-phase AC, the 22kW cable is a real operational gain rather than a theoretical one.

Buy for wear, not just for length

A cable used twice a day for years is a consumable. Our Type 2 leads are IP55 sealed and rated to be driven over, which is the specification that matters when the cable is handled in the wet, coiled quickly and occasionally run over on a rank.

Length recommendations

10m as a default, 15m if you also charge at home on a shared driveway or on-street. Compare across our Type 2 charging cables.

What cable does an LEVC TX need?
A Type 2 lead. Later cabs with the 22kW onboard charger can use the three-phase cable on a public AC post; earlier ones cap at 7.4kW.
Is the 22kW cable actually worth it for a taxi?
On a later TX, yes. It is one of the few vehicles that can genuinely exploit a 22kW public AC post, and on a 31kWh battery that is a useful top-up in well under an hour.
How often should I expect to charge?
The TX has a small battery and a petrol range extender, so the pattern is short frequent top-ups rather than one long overnight charge.
Will the cable stand up to daily use?
Our Type 2 leads are IP55 sealed and rated to be driven over, which is the relevant specification for a cable handled twice a day in all weather.
Does the VN5 van use the same cable?
Yes. Both use the Type 2 connector and the same leads fit either.
