Renault's UK EV range — Zoe (legacy, 2013-2024), Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, 5 E-Tech, 4 E-Tech and the upcoming Twingo E-Tech — has a quirk worth knowing: the Zoe was one of very few UK EVs to support 22kW AC home charging. Newer Renault EVs are 11kW max, with V2L on the 5 and 4.
Connector spec by model
- Zoe (2013-2024) — Type 2 + CCS DC (R135 onwards from 2019). 22kW AC on the R135. 11kW on earlier variants.
- Megane E-Tech (2022+) — Type 2 + CCS. 22kW AC. 130kW DC peak.
- Scenic E-Tech (2024+) — Type 2 + CCS. 22kW AC. 150kW DC.
- 5 E-Tech (2024+) — Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L 3.6kW.
- 4 E-Tech (2025+) — Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L 3.6kW.
- Twingo E-Tech (2026+) — Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW AC.
- Captur / Clio E-Tech (PHEV) — Type 2, 3.6kW AC.
Zoe and Megane — the 22kW exception
The Renault Zoe (R135 onwards) and Megane E-Tech are two of the few UK EVs that genuinely accept 22kW AC. If you have three-phase supply at home, a 22kW cable + 22kW wallbox charges these cars in ~3 hours — vs ~9 hours on single-phase 7kW. Other UK EVs on the same setup throttle to 11kW or less. This is a genuine Zoe/Megane advantage.
For the 5 E-Tech, 4 E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech (despite Renault marketing 22kW), the AC max varies — confirm with your specific build sheet. The 5 and 4 cap at 11kW per most spec sheets; the Scenic does take 22kW.
V2L on the 5 and 4 E-Tech
The new Renault 5 E-Tech (2024+) and 4 E-Tech (2025+) support V2L at 3.6kW from the Type 2 charge port — same spec as Hyundai/Kia. Compatible with our V2L adapter range. Useful for camping, garden tools, holiday-let backup power.
AC charging speed at home
- 22kW three-phase (Zoe R135, Megane, Scenic): ~80-90 miles/hour. Full battery in ~3 hours.
- 11kW three-phase (5, 4): ~45 miles/hour. ~5 hours overnight.
- Single-phase 7.4kW: ~25-30 miles/hour. Standard UK overnight charging.
Length recommendations
Renault charge ports vary — typically front grille (Zoe, Megane), rear-right (Scenic, 5, 4). UK driveways: 5-10m Type 2 cable covers most setups.
The legacy Zoe DC question
Pre-2019 Zoes (Q210, Q90, R110) had AC-only charging (no DC). The R135 from 2019 added CCS DC support — 50kW DC. If you have an older Zoe, no DC rapid charging is available; plan around AC only.
