Rivian EV Charging Cables

Two cables for Rivian owners, most of whom in the UK are running an imported vehicle. That makes one check essential before you order: look at the inlet on the car itself. European specification vehicles use Type 2, and other markets do not, so the wrong lead simply will not fit.

Once you know the connector, the rest is ordinary. Length first (5m for a driveway, 10m if access is awkward), then power, where 7.4kW single-phase is the realistic ceiling at home. If you are unsure what you have, message us a photo of the socket.

Choosing the right cable for your Rivian

Rivian does not sell through a UK dealer network, so every R1T and R1S in Britain arrived as a private or specialist import from North America. That makes this one of the few pages on the site where you must check the car before ordering, because North American vehicles are not fitted with the connector British chargers use.

Look at the charge port before you buy anything

North American Rivians use a connector that is not Type 2. British public AC posts and home wallboxes are Type 2. Depending on the age of the vehicle and whether it has been converted, an imported Rivian may need a Type 1 to Type 2 lead, or may have been retrofitted with a European inlet. There is no way to tell from the model name, so look at the socket.

How to identify the socket

  • Type 1: round five-pin socket, common on North American vehicles.
  • Type 2: seven-pin socket with a flattened top edge, the European standard.

Connector spec by model

  • R1T pickup: North American AC connector as built. Battery from around 105kWh to 149kWh.
  • R1S SUV: same arrangement, same battery options.

Very large batteries, ordinary AC charging

A 149kWh Rivian on a British 7.4kW single-phase supply is around twenty hours from empty. In practice these are cars charged from a high proportion rather than from zero, but it does mean AC charging is an overnight-and-then-some proposition and the vehicle rewards a wallbox rather than occasional top-ups.

Length recommendations

These are large vehicles, often parked outdoors. 15m is a reasonable default rather than an indulgence. Compare across our Type 1 to Type 2 cables.

Does my Rivian need Type 1 or Type 2?
Look at the charge port. A round five-pin socket is Type 1, common on North American vehicles. A seven-pin socket with a flat top edge is Type 2. You cannot tell from the model name.
Why does this matter more on a Rivian?
Rivian does not sell through a UK network, so every car here is an import built for a different charging standard.

How long does a full charge take?
Around twenty hours from empty on a 149kWh vehicle at 7.4kW. These are cars to charge overnight on a wallbox rather than top up occasionally.
What length should I buy?
