What to buy alongside a new cable
If you've just bought a Type 2 cable, the most-asked-for first accessories are:
- Cable bag — keeps the connector tips clean in your boot, protects upholstery from kerb grit. £15-30.
- Wall holster — keeps the connector off the ground at home, protects pins from corrosion. £20-40.
That's the 80% answer. Both £40-50 spend, immediate value, makes the daily charging routine materially tidier.
What to buy alongside a wallbox
Wallbox installs commonly need:
- Cable holder / tidy — manages the tethered cable when not in use. Most premium wallboxes (Andersen) hide the cable; others benefit from a hooked or magnetic holder.
- Cable cover for footpaths — if your cable runs across a pedestrian footpath (e.g. between front-of-house wallbox and rear-of-property parking), the EV cable cover is required by the Highways Act 1980 to prevent trip hazards.
- Type B RCD or RCBO — required for BS 7671 18th Edition compliance on EV circuits if not built into the wallbox. See Type B RCDs.
Outdoor sockets — installer-grade
If your charging plan is "occasional 3-pin from outside," do it properly. A dedicated IP66 outdoor 13A or 16A socket on its own circuit with Type B RCD protection is the safe answer. Don't run a household extension lead through a window — that's the most common cause of UK EV charging fires.
Cable security
UK EV cable theft is rare but does happen, particularly at unattended public charging in city centres and railway car parks. A cable lock — soft-shackle padlock or rigid barrel lock — costs £20-40 and removes the easy-target factor. Most modern wallboxes and EVs include software-based cable lock when charging is active; physical locks fill the gap when you want the cable secured between sessions.
Connector hygiene
Dirty connector pins are the #1 cause of "intermittent charging" complaints. Type 2 pins pick up dust, salt, road grit and brake pad residue. A specialist contact cleaner (we stock CRC and Klean-Strip variants) restores connection reliability in 2 minutes — apply, wipe, plug. Worth doing once a year on cables that live outdoors.
