One thing worth thinking about with a large vehicle is where the charge port ends up. On a long car parked on a driveway, a 5m lead can finish up stretched taut, which is hard on the connector over months of daily use. If there is any doubt, go to 10m. Choosing the right cable for your Range Rover

Land Rover's plug-in range is almost entirely hybrid, and the batteries are larger than most PHEVs while the onboard chargers are middling. That combination makes cable choice matter more here than on a typical plug-in hybrid, and there is one widespread misunderstanding about these cars worth clearing up first.

The 3-pin socket in the cabin is not vehicle-to-load

Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models offer a domestic-style socket inside the vehicle. It is fed by a small inverter rated around 120 watts, enough for a laptop charger and not much else. It is not V2L, it cannot run power tools or a fridge, and no discharge cable will change that. If someone offers you a V2L lead for a Land Rover, it will not do what you are expecting.

  • Range Rover P550e / P460e (2022+): Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW AC, 50kW DC. A 38.2kWh battery, unusually large for a plug-in hybrid.
  • Range Rover Sport PHEV (2022+): Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW AC.
  • Velar P400e: Type 2. 7.4kW AC.
  • Evoque P300e: Type 2. 7kW AC.
  • Discovery Sport P300e: Type 2. 7kW AC.

A big plug-in battery still needs an overnight charge

The current Range Rover carries 38.2kWh, which is more than some early full EVs. At 7.4kW that is around six hours from empty, so it is an overnight charge rather than a top-up. The 32amp single-phase lead is the right rating and the cars cannot use more, so the three-phase cable is not worth considering.

Length recommendations

These are long vehicles and the charge port sits on the front wing on most models, which puts it a surprising distance from a wall box mounted near the garage door. 10m is the sensible default and 15m is not excessive on a longer driveway. Compare across our Type 2 charging cables.
