Choosing the right cable for your Smart

Smart has had two lives as an electric brand, and the cars from each are very different animals. The older EQ ForTwo and ForFour were city cars with tiny batteries and slow chargers. The current #1 and #3 are conventional crossovers built with Geely. A cable that suits one is not obviously right for the other.

Connector spec by model

  • #1 (2023+): Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW or 22kW AC depending on trim. 66kWh. 150kW DC. V2L supported.
  • #3 (2023+): Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW or 22kW AC. 66kWh. V2L supported.
  • EQ ForTwo / ForFour (2017-2023): Type 2. 4.6kW AC, 22kW on the optional fast charger. 17.6kWh.

The #1 and #3 are among the few cars where 22kW is real

Higher trims carry a 22kW onboard charger, which is unusual at this size and price. On a British single-phase home it makes no difference, because the supply caps at 7.4kW. On a 22kW public AC post it makes a large one. If you use public AC charging regularly and your car has the faster onboard unit, the three-phase lead genuinely earns its money here.

Vehicle-to-load on the current cars

The #1 and #3 support V2L, which runs mains appliances from the car battery. That needs a discharge cable rather than a charging lead, and we stock one for Smart specifically. See our V2L adapter range.

The older EQ models are 4.6kW cars

Unless yours was specified with the optional 22kW charger, an EQ ForTwo accepts 4.6kW into 17.6kWh, which is around four hours. The 16amp cable covers it entirely.

Length recommendations

The EQ ForTwo is short enough that 5m is usually generous. The #1 and #3 are ordinary crossovers where 10m is the sensible default. Compare across our Type 2 charging cables.

Does the Smart #1 support vehicle-to-load?
Yes. The #1 and #3 can run mains appliances from the car battery, which needs a V2L discharge cable rather than a charging lead. We stock one for Smart.
Is the 22kW three-phase cable worth it on a Smart #1?
On higher trims with the 22kW onboard charger, yes, if you use 22kW public AC posts. On a British single-phase home supply it makes no difference.
What cable does an EQ ForTwo need?
A Type 2 lead. The 16amp cable covers the standard 4.6kW onboard charger entirely.
What length suits a Smart?
5m is usually generous on the EQ ForTwo given how short it is. 10m is the sensible default for the #1 and #3.
Do the old and new Smarts use the same cable?
Yes. Both generations use the standard Type 2 connector, though the older cars charge more slowly.
