Three-Phase EV Charging Cables

Three-phase EV charging cables deliver 11kW or 22kW (three times faster than single-phase) — but require a three-phase electricity supply at your property. Most UK homes don't have it; commercial sites, fleet depots and new-build estates often do.

Three-phase supply required. Three-phase electricity is rare in UK domestic settings — most homes are single-phase. Check with a qualified electrician before ordering. A three-phase wallbox on a single-phase supply will not work at full speed and may not work at all.

Three-phase EV charging cables — 11kW or 22kW — unlock the maximum AC charging speeds available from UK home wallboxes. The catch is that three-phase domestic supply is rare in the UK (mostly newer-build homes, larger detached properties, or commercial-converted-to-residential). Most UK homes won't benefit. The minority that will, get 1.5-3× faster home charging.

Single-phase vs three-phase — the basics

UK domestic electricity is supplied either as single-phase (one live conductor at 230V, typical 100A fuse) or three-phase (three live conductors, each 230V, often 80A or 100A per phase). Single-phase is the default for nearly every UK home. Three-phase is the default for commercial and industrial buildings, and an option for newer or larger residential properties.

Three-phase delivers more total power: 3 × 230V × 32A = 22kW, vs single-phase's 1 × 230V × 32A = 7.4kW. For EV charging, the difference is direct: a 22kW three-phase wallbox charges three times faster than a 7kW single-phase wallbox, given a car that can accept it.

How to know if you have three-phase

Check your meter cabinet: a three-phase meter has three live cables coming in (typically labelled L1, L2, L3) plus a neutral. A single-phase meter has one live and a neutral. If you don't know, you almost certainly have single-phase — three-phase domestic in the UK is rare enough that most owners would know.

Confirm with a qualified electrician before ordering a three-phase wallbox or cable. The £200-400 for a survey is well-spent vs ordering kit that can't be used.

Cable variants in this collection

  • 11kW (16A 3-phase) — middle option. Right answer for three-phase homes with EVs that cap at 11kW AC (BMW, VW Group, Mercedes, Tesla, Polestar — most of the market).
  • 22kW (32A 3-phase) — full three-phase. Right answer for three-phase homes with EVs that accept 22kW AC (Renault Zoe, Audi e-tron with charger upgrade, some Mercedes EQ models, Porsche Taycan with the 22kW option).

Connector — Type 2 with all phases active

Type 2 (Mennekes) — same connector as single-phase. The three phase pins are present in the connector body but unused on single-phase cables. Three-phase cables wire all three. The connector is identical from the outside; only the internal wiring differs.

EVs by AC max

Most modern EVs cap at 11kW AC even when the car is sold as "three-phase capable":

  • 11kW max: BMW (all current i-models), VW ID.3/4/5/7, Audi Q4/Q6 e-tron, Mercedes EQA/EQB/EQE, Tesla Model 3/Y, Polestar 2/3/4, Volvo EX30/XC40, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6, Kia EV6/9.
  • 22kW max: Renault Zoe (R135 onwards), Audi e-tron (with optional 22kW charger upgrade), some Mercedes EQS variants, Porsche Taycan (with the 22kW option), older Tesla Model S/X with dual-charger upgrade.

So if you have a Tesla Model 3 or BMW iX, an 11kW cable on three-phase supply = 11kW charging. A 22kW cable = still 11kW (car-side bottleneck). The cable rating is the upper limit; the car's onboard charger is the actual draw.

Charging speed maths

  • 7.4kW single-phase: ~25-30 miles/hour, 8 hours for full 60kWh battery.
  • 11kW three-phase: ~40-45 miles/hour, 5 hours for 60kWh.
  • 22kW three-phase: ~80-90 miles/hour, 2.5-3 hours for 60kWh.

Build and length

Three-phase cables are 30-50% heavier than single-phase equivalents at the same length. Pick the shortest length that works:

  • 5m or 7.5m for tight driveways.
  • 10m for typical layouts.
  • 15m+ only when genuinely needed; 15m three-phase 22kW is 8-10kg.

Upgrading to three-phase — when it makes sense

The DNO upgrade from single to three-phase costs £3,000-8,000 and takes 6-16 weeks. It rarely makes sense purely for EV charging — the 1-2 hour overnight saving on a typical commuter EV doesn't justify the capex. It makes more sense if you're also adding heat pumps, induction hobs, ASHPs and home batteries that all benefit from three-phase distribution.

Only if the wallbox is rated equal or higher. A 32A cable on a 16A wallbox throttles to 16A. Check your wallbox spec — most UK home wallboxes are 32A (7kW) or 32A three-phase (22kW).
