Nissan Leaf Charging Cable: Type 1 or Type 2? The Complete UK Guide

Pre-2018 Leaf needs Type 1. Post-2018 needs Type 2. Here's the definitive year-by-year chart, CHAdeMO facts, and exactly which cable to buy for your Leaf.

The Nissan Leaf is the UK’s most-owned used electric car. It is also the one that causes the most confusion when it comes to charging cables. Why? Because Nissan quietly changed the AC inlet between generations. Buy the wrong cable for your year, and it simply won’t fit. This guide cuts through it: which connector your Leaf has, what it means at the public charger, and exactly which cable to buy, all based on your battery size and year.


The Leaf connector split: which year is which?

Most sites tell you “the Nissan Leaf uses a Type 1 cable” and leave it there. That is only half the story, and it’s outdated. The correct answer depends entirely on which generation of Leaf you own.

Nissan changed the AC inlet type when they launched the second-generation Leaf in the UK in 2018. Every Leaf built before that point uses a Type 1 (SAE J1772) AC inlet. Every Leaf from 2018 onwards uses a Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) AC inlet, in line with the rest of the European and UK EV market.

The battery size is the clearest indicator, because it maps directly to the generation:

  • 24kWh Leaf (2011-2017, Gen 1): AC inlet = Type 1 (SAE J1772, 5-pin round), DC = CHAdeMO, Onboard AC = 3.3kW (some variants 6.6kW)
  • 30kWh Leaf (2016-2017, Gen 1): AC inlet = Type 1 (SAE J1772, 5-pin round), DC = CHAdeMO, Onboard AC = 6.6kW
  • 40kWh Leaf (2018: present, Gen 2): AC inlet = Type 2 (IEC 62196-2, 7-pin D-shape), DC = CHAdeMO, Onboard AC = 6.6kW
  • 62kWh Leaf e+ (2019: present, Gen 2): AC inlet = Type 2 (IEC 62196-2, 7-pin D-shape), DC = CHAdeMO, Onboard AC = 6.6kW

Quick rule: if your Leaf has a 24kWh or 30kWh battery, it is Type 1. If it has a 40kWh or 62kWh battery, it is Type 2. The “LEAF” nameplate alone tells you nothing about the connector: you need the year or the battery size.


Type 1 Leaf (24kWh and 30kWh): what cable do you need?

If you own a first-generation Leaf, any model from 2011 to 2017 whether 24kWh or 30kWh, your AC charging inlet is a Type 1 (SAE J1772) socket. This is the round, 5-pin connector standard that was common in Japan and North America before Europe standardised on Type 2.

For home charging, you need a Type 1 Mode 3 cable: Type 1 plug on the car end, and either a Type 2 plug or a 3-pin domestic plug on the other end, depending on your wallbox or socket. If you have a dedicated wallbox at home (which we strongly recommend over a 3-pin), it will almost certainly have a Type 2 socket, so you need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable. More on that below.

Type 2 Leaf (40kWh and 62kWh): what cable do you need?

The second-generation Leaf (2018 onwards), including the 62kWh e+ variant from 2019, uses a Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) AC inlet. According to IEC 62196-2 (the AC connector standard), Type 2 is the mandatory standard for AC EV charging across Europe, which means your 40kWh or 62kWh Leaf is fully compatible with every public AC post and the vast majority of home wallboxes in the UK, without any adaptors or special cables.

Rapid charging and CHAdeMO: no cable required

Here is something that catches many new Leaf owners off guard: you do not need to buy a cable for rapid charging, and there is no such thing as a CHAdeMO cable you can purchase for home use.

All Leaf generations (24kWh, 30kWh, 40kWh, and 62kWh) include a CHAdeMO DC rapid charging port. CHAdeMO is a DC standard that delivers up to 50kW at compatible rapid chargers. But CHAdeMO chargers always have a tethered cable built into the charger unit. You simply pull the cable off the post and plug the CHAdeMO connector directly into the port on the front of your Leaf. No cable purchase needed.

One honest note for used Leaf buyers: CHAdeMO infrastructure is declining in the UK. As CCS (Combined Charging System) has become the dominant DC rapid standard for newer EVs, many charging networks have prioritised CCS over CHAdeMO. Some older rapid chargers are being retired or replaced with CCS-only units. This does not make the Leaf unusable for rapid charging, but it is worth being aware of if you rely heavily on public rapid charging. How fast does the Leaf charge? (6.6kW onboard)

The charging speed you see at the wall is limited by the onboard AC charger inside the car itself. According to Nissan’s published Leaf charging specifications, here is what each variant supports:

  • 24kWh Leaf (2011-2017): Most early models were fitted with a 3.3kW onboard charger. Some later 24kWh variants were upgraded to 6.6kW. Check your specific car’s specification sheet if you are unsure.
  • 30kWh Leaf (2016-2017): 6.6kW onboard charger as standard.
  • 40kWh Leaf (2018+): 6.6kW onboard charger (single-phase). At a 32A wallbox, you will draw approximately 6.6kW. Even if the wallbox can supply up to 7.4kW, the car’s charger caps the rate.
  • 62kWh Leaf e+ (2019+): 6.6kW onboard charger (single-phase), same ceiling as the 40kWh.

What this means in practice: there is no benefit to buying a cable rated above 32A for the Leaf. A good 32A Type 2 cable is all you need. With a 6.6kW onboard charger and a 40kWh battery, you are looking at approximately 8 hours for a full charge from near-empty, ideal for overnight home charging.

If your 24kWh Leaf has a 3.3kW onboard charger, charging will be slower: roughly 8-9 hours for the smaller 24kWh pack, but from a lower ceiling. A 16A or 32A cable will both work; the car will simply draw what its charger can accept.


Using an older Type 1 Leaf at public Type 2 posts

This is where a lot of first-generation Leaf owners hit a wall. The UK’s public AC charging network is almost entirely Type 2, whether a lamppost charger, a car park pod, or a destination charger at a hotel or supermarket. A Type 1 Leaf cannot plug directly into a Type 2 post.

The solution is a Type 1 to Type 2 cable: a cable with a Type 1 (J1772) plug on one end (to go into your car) and a Type 2 plug on the other end (to go into the public post). This is a standard product, sometimes called an “import cable” in the trade, because it was originally designed for Japanese-spec EVs brought to the UK market.

Important: this is a cable, not an adapter dongle. We occasionally see owners try to use a small pin-converter adapter to bridge the two standards. Do not do this. The correct solution is always a proper Mode 3 cable with the right connector moulded onto each end. It is the safe, legal, and reliable approach.

How to visually identify which inlet your Leaf has: open the charge port flap and count the pins in the AC socket (the smaller of the two sockets on the left side):

  • 5 pins in a circular housing → Type 1. You have a pre-2018 Leaf.
  • 7 pins in a flattened-D (trapezoidal) housing → Type 2. You have a 2018+ Leaf.

Getting the length right

Cable length is easy to overlook until you are standing in the rain with 30cm of slack and a charge port on the wrong side of the car. Here is our general guidance for Leaf owners:

  • 5 metres is the right choice for most home setups where the wallbox is close to where the car parks. It is also the most practical length for public posts, where a longer cable can be awkward to handle and store.
  • 7 metres is worth considering if your wallbox is mounted on a wall opposite the car’s charge port, or if your driveway layout means the car sometimes parks further from the charger than usual.

What charging cable does a Nissan Leaf need? It depends entirely on the year and battery. A Leaf with a 24kWh or 30kWh battery (made before 2018) uses a Type 1 cable. A Leaf with a 40kWh or 62kWh battery (2018 onwards) uses a standard Type 2 cable. The CHAdeMO rapid port is on all generations, but rapid chargers supply their own tethered cable.

How do I know if my Leaf is Type 1 or Type 2? Look at the battery size badge on the car, or check the V5 registration date. Any Leaf registered before 2018 is almost certainly a 24kWh or 30kWh with a Type 1 inlet. Any 40kWh or 62kWh model (2018 onwards) has a Type 2 inlet. If in doubt, open the charge port flap and count the pins: Type 1 has 5 pins in a round housing; Type 2 has 7 pins in a flattened-D housing.

Can I use a Nissan Leaf (Type 1) at public charging posts? Yes. Most public AC posts have a Type 2 socket. You need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable (one end Type 1, the other Type 2). This is a standard cable available from specialist UK retailers. Never use an adapter: buy the correct cable with the right connector on each end.

How fast does the Nissan Leaf charge? The 40kWh Leaf charges at up to 6.6kW AC (single-phase). At a 32A wallbox you’ll get approximately 6.6kW, a full charge in around 8 hours. The 24kWh Leaf may have a 3.3kW onboard charger (older variants), giving a slower rate. CHAdeMO rapids can deliver up to 50kW DC but infrastructure is declining.

Do I need a cable for CHAdeMO rapid charging? No. CHAdeMO rapid chargers always have tethered cables at the charger unit. You plug directly into the large CHAdeMO port on the front of your Leaf. There is no CHAdeMO cable to buy. They are always supplied by the charging station.

Is the Nissan Leaf Type 1 or Type 2, and which is better? If you’re buying used, a Type 2 Leaf (40kWh+, 2018+) is more convenient: Type 2 is the UK and European universal standard, and all public AC posts support it natively. Type 1 Leaf owners can still charge at public posts with the correct Type 1 to Type 2 cable, but it’s an extra step.
