Overview

An electric car needs refuelling like any other. Where a pump hose moves petrol into a tank, a charging cable moves energy into the battery pack, and for that it needs a plug-in source. That is why every lead carries a connector at each end, and it is where a lot of people new to the technology come unstuck. Some cars take a Type 1 to Type 2 cable; others use Type 2 to Type 2 connectors.

We stock 16A and 32A leads, plus three-phase cables for higher capacity vehicles such as the Tesla range. If you are shopping for an electric car, new or used, it is worth knowing that early production models were built with a 3.6kW onboard charger as standard and need a 16A cable, while more recent vehicles have 7kW onboard charging and want a 32A cable. Check the model notes across our cable range if you are not certain which fits.

Every electric car is delivered with a standard cable that plugs into a common household electrical outlet. Charging at home from a domestic 3-pin socket works perfectly well, it is simply slow and best left to run overnight. For home use, for fast-charging public points and for commercial premises, a second cable earns its place. Our advice: carry one of our charging cables on board and leave the supplied one at home.

Built to take the weight of a car, so you can drive over the cable without damaging it (protection against pressure).

  • All-weather rated

Rated IP55 and built to operate from -30°C to +60°C, so it charges reliably through UK rain, frost and summer heat.

FAQs

Will this cable fit my car?
Yes, if your car has a Type 1 inlet. Almost every EV sold new in the UK since 2018 uses Type 2; Type 1 appears on older and imported models. Check your charge port has a 5-pin Type 1 socket, or use our reg checker.
Which cable length should I choose?
Most driveways are fine with 5m. Choose 7-10m if the charge point is wall-mounted away from where you park or your charge port is on the far side of the car, and 15-20m for on-street or awkward layouts. Available here in 5m, 10m.
Can I use it at public charge points as well as at home?
Yes. This is a Mode 3 Type 2 cable, so it works at your home wallbox and at any untethered public AC charge point. Rapid DC chargers (motorway) come with their own tethered cables, so you don't need one for those.
Is it safe to leave outside in the rain?
Yes. The cable and connectors are rated IP55 and built for -30°C to +60°C, so they're safe in UK rain, frost and snow. Don't submerge the connectors in standing water.
What warranty and delivery do I get?
Free next-working-day UK delivery on orders over £150, with 30-day returns on unused items. Warranty: 24 months (2 years) manufacturer warranty.

What customers say about us

  • First class service

First class service. Ordered 15m cable and it was delivered next day. Minor hiccup in that the accompanying bag was missing. Quick email to Jake at EV Cable Hub and the bag arrived next working day. 1st class product and even better customer service. Thank you.
