EV Charging Cable Bags and Storage: How to Choose the Right One

EV cable bags explained: size guide by cable length, correct coiling method, IP ratings, and boot storage tips for UK drivers.

If you’ve ever opened your boot to find your EV cable wrapped round a shopping bag, trailing mud from the last public charge point, you already know the problem. A purpose-made EV cable bag costs less than £25, takes up no more space than the cable itself, and turns a boot-dwelling tangle into something you can grab cleanly in the dark. It also stops the dirt, grit, and moisture your cable picks up at public charge points from transferring to everything else in your car.


Why a dedicated cable bag matters

A charging cable left loose in the boot isn’t just untidy. It’s slowly wearing itself out. Every time you drive, the cable shifts and rubs against the boot floor, against your shopping, against itself. The outer sheath is robust, but surface abrasion over thousands of miles is cumulative. More immediately, every public charge point your cable touches deposits grit and moisture onto the connector face and the sheath. That grit doesn’t stay there politely: it spreads to everything the cable then touches in your boot.

A dedicated bag solves both problems at once. Grit and mud stay inside the bag. The cable stays coiled, reducing transit movement. And when you arrive at a charge point, you pull out a clean cable rather than one that’s been rolling around with your gym bag since Tuesday.

Key specifications to check

Material and water resistance

The outer fabric floor is 1,200 denier (1,200D) woven polyester. Below this (lighter nylon or thin polyester) the bag won’t handle repeated loading and unloading without wear at the zip and handle stitching. Above it, material choice becomes less critical.

The inner lining matters more than the outer shell for water resistance. Look for a PU-coated or TPU-lined interior. This is what actually keeps moisture from the cable moving through the bag wall in either direction.

IP rating: what to look for instead

Most EV cable bags don’t carry a formal IP rating, and that’s not a problem. IP ratings (Ingress Protection) are designed for fixed electrical enclosures tested under controlled conditions. A flexible fabric bag doesn’t fit the test protocol, so manufacturers don’t pursue it, even for genuinely water-resistant bags.

What to look for instead: - PU-coated or TPU-lined interior - Weather flap over the zip (prevents rainwater tracking into the zip teeth) - Water-resistant outer fabric (1,200D polyester or above) - Stitched seams rather than glued

These practical features deliver effective water resistance for normal UK charging use (rain, damp boot floors, wet hands) without the IP stamp.

Size by cable length

Matching bag size to cable length is the most commonly misjudged spec. Too small and you’ll spend three minutes fighting the zip every time you store the cable. Too large and the cable rattles inside rather than sitting neatly.

Always check the product’s stated maximum cable length: dimensions alone can be misleading because bag depth varies considerably. A tall, narrow bag might have the same footprint as a wide, shallow one but fit very different cable lengths.

If in doubt, size up. A bag one size too large is a minor inconvenience. A bag one size too small is something you’ll resent every charge stop.


The correct coil method: protect the cable inside the bag

How you coil the cable matters as much as where you store it. Most cable problems that originate inside the bag come from incorrect coiling, not from the bag itself.

Same-direction loops (correct): coil the cable in consistent clockwise (or anti-clockwise) loops of roughly 300-400 mm diameter. Each loop follows the natural lay of the cable without fighting it. When you uncoil, the cable runs out cleanly with no residual twist.

Figure-of-eight coiling (incorrect): this is the instinctive method because it feels tidy, but each crossover point introduces an opposite-direction twist into the cable. After a hundred coil-uncoil cycles, those twists accumulate into a persistent corkscrew deformation that’s worst near the connectors, exactly where you don’t want kinking.

Loop diameter matters too. A 300-400 mm loop is appropriate for a 6 mm² cable (standard 32A Type 2 cable). Tighter loops stress the sheath at the inner radius; excessively large loops make the bag much harder to close.


Boot tidiness tips: making the bag work in the car

A good cable bag shouldn’t move around the boot. Most quality bags include at least one of: a top-mounted carry handle, a side grip, and a carabiner attachment point or anchor loop.

If your boot has a tie-down loop or organiser rail, clip the bag’s carabiner to it. A 10 m cable bag weighs 3-4 kg. Under hard braking that’s a meaningful projectile if it’s sliding free.

Vertical vs horizontal stowage: most cable bags are circular/cylindrical and designed to be stored upright (on their base). This keeps the coil flat and the zip accessible. Storing the bag on its side means the cable tends to shift to the bottom wall of the bag over time, which can cause a lopsided coil.

Wet cables: if you’re packing a cable that’s wet from rain exposure, don’t seal the bag immediately. Leave the zip slightly open for the drive home so moisture can escape. A sealed bag with a wet cable and no airflow can develop musty odours in the lining over time.
