An EV cable bag keeps your Type 2 charging cable tidy in the boot, weatherproof on the driveway, and protected from connector grit and damage. The £15-30 spend is the single best accessory return on investment for any EV owner — protects a £80-200 cable, keeps your boot upholstery clean, makes daily charging materially less annoying.
Why you need one
An EV cable lives outdoors when in use. Off-the-driveway, the connector tips and the cable jacket pick up:
- Salt, grit and brake-pad residue from the road.
- Mud and water from rainy charge sessions.
- Tarmac scuffs from being dropped (which they will be).
Without a bag, that grime ends up in your boot upholstery, on your hands every time you handle the cable, and gradually accumulates on the connector pins — degrading contact reliability over time. A bag fixes all three problems.
Bag types we stock
- Padded zipped carry bag — foam-padded with a zipper, for daily-use cables. £15-25. The mainstream choice.
- Hardshell carry case — rigid case with internal moulding for the cable + connectors. £35-60. Premium feel, more bulky.
- Waterproof tote — heavier-duty roll-top bag for granny chargers and combination cables. £20-40.
Sizing
Bags are sized to fit specific cable lengths and ratings. A 5m 7.4kW cable fits a different bag than a 20m 22kW three-phase cable — three-phase cables are noticeably heavier and stiffer and need more internal space. Match the bag to the cable:
- Up to 7.5m / 7.4kW — small bag, ~30×30×15 cm.
- 10m / 7.4kW — medium bag, ~35×35×20 cm.
- 15-20m / 7.4kW — large bag, ~40×40×25 cm.
- 10m / 22kW three-phase — XL hardshell with reinforced base, ~40×40×30 cm.
Build quality features worth paying for
- Internal padding — protects the connector pins from dropping inside the bag.
- Reinforced base — the cable's weight is concentrated; a thin nylon base wears through in a year.
- Internal pocket for the spare connector cap — small but mattering detail.
- External handle — easier to grab from a boot than fumbling with the zipper.
- Water-resistant zipper — keeps the inside dry when the bag is in a wet boot.
Where the bag lives
Two patterns:
- In your boot — for socketed wallbox owners who carry the cable for public charging too. Most common UK pattern.
- In a cupboard near the wallbox — for tethered wallbox owners who only have a cable for backup or visiting.
Pairing
If you charge daily at home outside, also consider a wall holder for permanent outdoor cable storage between charging sessions — keeps the connector off the ground without needing to bag it every time.
