A 10m EV cable is not for everyone, and the people who buy one and don’t need it regret it: it’s heavier, bulkier, and costs more than the 7m cable that would have done the job. But the people who need one and buy a 7m cable regret it harder. They’re the ones stretching the cable across the driveway or finding out at a public post that they can’t reach. Here is how to know which camp you’re in.
When 10m beats 7m: the genuine use cases
The case for 10m is always grounded in a measured distance. If your wallbox-to-port measurement (as described in our EV cable length guide) comes out above 6 metres, a 7m cable won’t give you the one metre of slack that keeps the cable comfortable and strain-free. You need 10m.
The five situations where 10m consistently makes sense:
1. Long driveways with the wallbox at the far end. If your wallbox is mounted at the garage end of a long driveway and you park near the house, the straight-line distance alone can exceed 6m before you account for wallbox height and port position.
2. Detached garage charger, parking outside. The socket is inside the garage; the car parks on the apron or driveway outside. The cable has to travel through the garage opening, along the ground, and to the car, often 7-10m in total.
3. On-street lamp-post or kerbside charger. You cannot control which bay you can park in relative to the charger post. On a busy street, the nearest available space may be one full car length away from the socket. A 10m cable gives you a bay’s worth of extra reach. 4. Charge port on the far side of a large vehicle. A 7-seat SUV with a rear-right port and a wallbox on the left wall of the driveway creates a long cable route even on a standard-width drive.
5. Two-car driveways where the cable occasionally needs to reach the car parked further back. The cable needs to handle the worst-case park, not the ideal one.
The weight reality of a 10m cable
A 32A Type 2 10m cable weighs approximately 4.5-5kg. That is roughly the weight of a full 5-litre jerry can of water, or a mid-range DSLR camera with a long lens.

The difference between 7m and 10m, approximately 1.5kg, is genuinely noticeable. A 7m cable can be coiled one-handed and hung on a hook. A 10m cable is a two-handed job to coil and needs a bag to keep it manageable.

The weight is not a reason to avoid 10m if you need 10m. It is a reason not to buy 10m if 7m would do.
Voltage drop: does 10m affect charging speed?
Slightly, but not in a way you will notice. All copper conductors have electrical resistance, and resistance causes a small voltage drop under load. At 10m with a 32A cable using 6mm² copper conductors, the standard specification for properly rated Type 2 cables, the voltage drop at 7.4kW (32A, single-phase) is approximately 1.5%.
For reference, BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations), Section 722 sets voltage drop limits for EV charging circuits. A quality 10m cable with 6mm² conductors sits comfortably within those limits.
The practical outcome: at 10m, you are not losing meaningful charging speed. The difference between 7m and 10m in charging time, for a typical 60kWh car battery at 7.4kW, is measurable in seconds, not minutes. Do not let voltage drop at 10m factor into your decision. What matters at 10m is the weight and the price step, not the electrical performance.

Coil storage and carry: what 10m actually means in practice
A 10m cable coils to roughly a 350-400mm diameter bundle. Think of a large dinner plate. That is approximately what you are dealing with.

A 7m cable can usually be coiled and dropped into a boot bag or tucked into a small shelf. A 10m cable needs to be properly coiled before bagging. Loose in the boot it tangles, bunches, and picks up grit from the floor. A dedicated cable bag makes the difference between a nuisance and a non-issue. It is the most useful accessory for any cable over 7m, and a worthwhile addition even for 7m if you carry the cable in the boot daily. The price step: is it worth paying more for 10m?
A 10m Type 2 cable typically costs £20-£40 more than the equivalent 7m cable from the same manufacturer, same specification. That is the full additional cost. There is no other hardware or installation involved.
Framed that way, the decision is simple: if your measured distance requires 10m, the £20-£40 is a one-time purchase you make once and live with for years. The cost of buying a 7m cable, finding it doesn’t reach, and buying a 10m cable to replace it is the £20-£40 you saved plus the cost of the incorrect cable.
If your measured distance clearly falls within 7m reach, the £20-£40 buys you extra cable you’ll never uncoil. Save it.

Measure first. The decision does not need to be intuitive. It follows from your specific setup.
- Measured distance under 5m: Buy a 5m cable if it’s a very tight home-only setup. Otherwise 7m.
- Measured distance 5-6m: Buy 7m.
- Measured distance 6-9m: Buy 10m.
