Ask the internet what charging cable the BMW i3 needs and you’ll find more than a few pages confidently telling you it’s Type 1. It isn’t. Every BMW electric vehicle sold in the UK, from the original i3 in 2013 to the latest iX and i4, uses a Type 2 inlet. The confusion comes from the i3’s North American spec. Here’s what UK BMW owners actually need, model by model, with the onboard charger ratings that determine which cable spec to buy.
The BMW i3 is Type 2, not Type 1 (let’s clear this up)
This is the single most common error in BMW EV charging advice online, and it matters. If you buy a Type 1 cable for a UK-spec BMW i3, it will not fit. The i3’s charge port takes a Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) connector, full stop.
So where does the confusion come from? BMW sold the i3 in North America with a Type 1 (SAE J1772) inlet, because that is the standard in the US and Canada. Those articles confidently stating “BMW i3 = Type 1” are written for, or copied from, American sources. If you are searching “BMW i3 charging cable type” in the UK, the answer is Type 2, always.
The one exception worth flagging: if you are buying a grey-import i3 that was originally sold in the US or Canada, check the inlet before ordering a cable. North American i3s genuinely do use a Type 1 connector. For any i3 sold new in the UK or EU, it is Type 2. Every current and recent BMW EV and PHEV in the UK uses a Type 2 AC inlet. The differences that matter are in the onboard charger rating and whether the car supports single-phase or three-phase AC charging. Those two factors determine which cable spec you actually need.

A few things to note from the table. First, DC rapid charging on all BMW EVs (not PHEVs) uses CCS Combo 2, which is handled by the rapid charger’s tethered cable, so you do not buy a separate DC cable. Second, the PHEV models (530e, 330e and similar) do not have DC rapid charging at all; they charge on AC only via their onboard charger. Third, even though all inlets are Type 2, the split between single-phase (i3, PHEVs) and three-phase (iX, i4, iX3, i5) is critical when choosing a cable.
Onboard charger ratings: i3 vs i4/iX
The BMW i3 has a 7.4kW single-phase onboard AC charger. This applies to all UK-spec i3s across the production run from 2013 to 2022. According to BMW’s published onboard charger specifications, the i3 never received a three-phase AC charger. That 7.4kW is the ceiling, and no cable upgrade will change it.
The BMW iX, i4, iX3, and i5 all have 11kW three-phase onboard AC chargers, again per BMW’s published onboard charger specifications. This is important because a number of comparison sites state these cars charge at “up to 22kW”. That is incorrect. The cars cap at 11kW on AC regardless of what the public charger is rated at.

Single-phase or three-phase cable for your BMW?
The practical question is: does the cable spec you choose affect how fast your BMW charges? The answer depends on the model.
For the BMW i3: a three-phase cable will not give you faster charging than a single-phase cable. The i3’s onboard charger is single-phase only, rated at 7.4kW. Whether you plug in a single-phase or three-phase cable, the car draws 7.4kW maximum at a home wallbox. A standard 32A single-phase Type 2 Mode 3 cable is perfectly suited to the i3.
For the BMW i4, iX, iX3, and i5: a three-phase cable does allow faster charging, but only at three-phase public chargers. At a standard single-phase home wallbox (the majority of UK home installations), you will get 7.4kW regardless of cable type. At a public 3-phase post rated at 11kW or above, a three-phase cable allows you to reach the car’s 11kW AC maximum. A single-phase cable would cap you at 7.4kW even at a three-phase post.
Our recommendation: if you drive an iX, i4, iX3, or i5 and regularly use public AC charging posts, a 32A three-phase Type 2 cable is worth having. If you primarily charge at home on a single-phase wallbox, the practical difference is zero, but a three-phase cable gives you the flexibility for faster public charging without buying a second cable later.
Cable length for BMW EVs
5 metres is right for most UK driveways. It reaches a standard wall-mounted charger from a car parked in front of the garage or on the drive, with enough slack to connect without stretching. BMW charge ports are located at different positions depending on the model. On the i3, the port is at the rear nearside. On the iX and i4, it is at the rear offside. If your wallbox is mounted on the same side as the charge port, 5m will almost always be sufficient.
Does your BMW include a granny cable?
It varies, and the picture has shifted over the years. Some BMW EVs have historically shipped with a Mode 2 “granny” cable in the vehicle kit. This is a slow-charging cable with a standard 3-pin UK plug at one end and a Type 2 connector at the other, rated at around 2.3kW. It is designed for occasional use from a domestic socket, not as a primary charging solution.
Newer BMW models increasingly do not include a Mode 2 cable in the box. BMW’s approach has changed over successive model generations, and the absence of a granny cable is now increasingly common, particularly on the iX, i4, and i5. Check your vehicle handbook or ask your dealer if you are unsure whether your specific car includes one.
Regardless of what came in the box, we would always recommend a dedicated 32A Type 2 Mode 3 cable for regular home wallbox use. A Mode 2 granny cable is a useful emergency backup, but at 2.3kW it will take the better part of two days to charge a large battery EV from empty.
One capability BMW EVs do not have: vehicle-to-load (V2L), the ability to export power from the battery to run appliances. No BMW EV currently available in the UK offers V2L.
