Overview
BMW's i4 is the electric Gran Coupé, sharing its body with the 4 Series and putting a single or twin motor drivetrain underneath. In eDrive40 trim the WLTP figure runs to 365 miles, which puts it among the longest legged cars BMW sells.
AC charging happens through a Type 2 (Mode 3) socket, and the onboard charger is rated at 11kW. There is a catch worth understanding before you spend money on a cable. Drawing 11kW requires a three-phase supply, and the overwhelming majority of UK homes are single-phase. On an ordinary 7.4kW home wallbox the i4 takes the full 7.4kW and needs about eleven hours from empty, so an overnight charge covers it with room left over. Where three-phase is available, at home or on a 22kW public post, a 32A three-phase lead lets the car pull its full 11kW and brings that figure down to roughly seven and a half hours.
DC rapid charging is a separate matter, and it needs no cable from us. The eDrive40 and M50 accept up to 205kW through the car's CCS port, which is about a half-hour stop from 10 to 80%, run on the charger's own tethered lead.
Picking your cable
- Type 2 to Type 2. The lead nearly every i4 owner wants. It covers home wallboxes and public posts across the UK. 5m is plenty where the car sits beside the box; go to 10m if the unit is on the far wall, or if you park nose-in on the street.
- Type 2 to 3-pin. A Mode 2 lead for emergencies and occasional top-ups from a household socket. At 2.3kW it is slow and it is not meant to be your main charger, but it earns its place in the boot.

Installation

10m and 5m cables for untethered charger use
Bought one 10m cable to use with an untethered wall charger at home. Very impressed with quality so bought a second 5m cable to keep in the van in case I needed to use an untethered charger when on the road. Cables are well made and sufficiently flexible to allow easy use.
