Overview

The Volkswagen Passat GTE will run about 35km fully electric on a single charge, give or take, depending on speed, driving style and weather. Its onboard charger caps out at 3.7kW, and that one number decides which cable you should buy.

Because the car cannot draw more than 3.7kW, the 16amp Type 2 to Type 2 lead charges it just as quickly as the 32amp version does: 2h40m either way. A charging cable will not charge faster than the maximum capacity the car can handle, so spend the difference on length instead.

Our Passat GTE leads are 240v Type 2 to Type 2 cables in 16amp and 32amp, supplied in two lengths, 5m and 10m. The cable is extra thick and fully weatherproof, carries TUV and CE certifications, and is fitted with rubber caps to protect the connectors when not in use. UK and EU standard compatibility means one lead covers home, workstation and any public charging unit with a Type 2 socket.

FAQs

Is this cable compatible with the Volkswagen Passat GTE?
Yes. The Volkswagen Passat GTE uses a Type 2 inlet, and this is a Type 2 charging cable. Not sure? Check the charge port for a 7-pin Type 2 socket, or use our reg checker.
Which cable length should I choose?
Most driveways are fine with 5m. Choose 7-10m if the charge point is wall-mounted away from where you park or your charge port is on the far side of the car, and 15-20m for on-street or awkward layouts. Available here in 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m.
Do I need the 22kW (three-phase) option?
Only if you have a three-phase supply, or you want to be ready for 22kW public AC posts. A three-phase cable still works on a standard single-phase home wallbox; it just charges at up to 7.4kW. Most UK homes are single-phase.
Can I use it at public charge points as well as at home?
Yes. This is a Mode 3 Type 2 cable, so it works at your home wallbox and at any untethered public AC charge point. Rapid DC chargers (motorway) come with their own tethered cables, so you don't need one for those.
What's the 3-pin option for?
The 3-pin (Mode 2 'granny') option lets you top up from a standard domestic socket at up to ~2.3kW when you're away from a wallbox. It's a backup for occasional use, not a daily charging method.
Is it safe to leave outside in the rain?
Yes. The cable and connectors are rated IP55 and built for -30°C to +60°C, so they're safe in UK rain, frost and snow. Don't submerge the connectors in standing water.
What warranty and delivery do I get?
