A 5m EV charging cable is the UK standard length, long enough to reach from a sensibly-placed wallbox to the parking spot on most British driveways, short enough to coil neatly into a boot bag. If you don't have a specific reason to choose differently, 5m is what to buy.
Why 5m became the default
Public AC charge points in the UK and Europe are designed around the assumption that EV owners carry a 5m cable. Most chargers' bay layouts work with 5m. Most home wallboxes are installed within 4m of where the car parks. 5m hits the sweet spot of usable in 90%+ of UK scenarios while staying light and compact.
When 5m works
- Standard UK driveway with the wallbox positioned 1-3m from where you park.
- Public AC charging at almost every UK public Type 2 post: bays are designed for 5m.
- Boot storage: 5m fits in a small cable bag and tucks under the boot floor.
- Workplace charging: most office wallboxes are placed near parking bays.
When 5m doesn't reach
- Wallbox at one end of a wider driveway, parking the other: go to 8m or 10m.
- Charge port on the opposite side of the car from the public post: common on some bay layouts; 8m handles it.
- Multi-car households sharing one wallbox: longer cable lets the second car park without moving the first.
- Rural and large-plot properties: see 15m upwards.
Power rating: 7.4kW or 11kW or 22kW?
Power and length are independent: pick on the basis of your wallbox and car combination:
- 7.4kW (32A single-phase): the UK home standard. Right for any single-phase home wallbox and any UK EV.
- 11kW (16A three-phase): only useful if both the wallbox and the car support three-phase AC.
- 22kW (32A three-phase): fastest AC speed possible. Only if you have three-phase supply and a 22kW-capable car.
If you're not sure: 7.4kW single-phase is the right default for almost every UK home buyer.
Connector type
- Type 2 to Type 2: UK and European standard for every modern EV. This is the cable to choose unless you have a specific older car.
- Type 1 to Type 2: older Nissan Leaf 2011-2017, Outlander PHEV Mk1, original BMW i3, first-gen Soul EV. See the Type 1 to Type 2 collection.
UK build quality checklist
- IEC 62196-2 (Type 2 / Mennekes) certified: the European standard.
- IP44 minimum, IP54 better: UK rain proofing.
- OFC pure copper: never CCA (copper-clad aluminium); CCA cables run hot under sustained load.
- Flexible TPU outer sheath: stays supple in winter cold; PVC stiffens and cracks.
- 2-year UK warranty from a UK retailer.
- Cable bag included: keeps connectors clean in the boot.
5m alternatives: when to pay more
Premium 5m cables (£60-80) over budget 5m cables (£35-50) buy you: thicker conductors that run cooler under load, better sheathing that lasts longer in UK weather, more positive connector clicks that don't loosen over time, and a bag that's actually useful. For a cable you'll use twice a day for years, the premium pays back. For a backup cable kept in the boot for occasional use, budget is fine.
Storage and care
Coil loosely (figure-8 or large loops) and store in the supplied bag. Tight winding stresses the conductors and the moulded strain reliefs. Don't drag the cable along the ground; carry it. Wipe the connectors with a dry cloth occasionally to clear road grit. With reasonable care, a quality 5m cable lasts 10+ years.
