An 8m EV charging cable is the workhorse length for UK home and public charging — long enough to reach across a single driveway when the wallbox or socket isn't perfectly placed, short enough to coil neatly into a boot bag and not become unwieldy. It's the most popular alternative to the standard 5m for buyers who've tried 5m and found it just-too-short.
When 8m is the right length
- Untethered wallbox at one end of the driveway, parking at the other — 5m forces you to park nose-in; 8m lets you park either way round.
- Charge port on the opposite side of the car from the post — common at public AC chargers where bay layout doesn't put the inlet near the post.
- Two-car driveway sharing one wallbox — if the second car parks past the first, 8m gives you the reach to plug it in without moving the first car.
- Awkward L-shaped driveways — anywhere the car parks beyond a corner from the wallbox.
When 8m is overkill (and what to do)
If you have a tethered wallbox where the cable is fixed to the unit, you don't need a 8m cable at all — the wallbox cable is the cable. If your driveway is short and the wallbox is positioned correctly, 5m saves money and packs smaller. If you genuinely need more than 8m of reach, look at 10m rather than living with constant cable strain. There's a price for length: a 8m cable weighs about 1.6× more than a 5m cable and takes longer to coil — small but real costs.
Power rating: 7.4kW, 11kW or 22kW?
An 8m Type 2 cable comes in three standard power tiers; pick on the basis of your wallbox / car combination, not on the basis of "future proof, get the biggest":
- 7.4kW (32A single-phase) — UK home standard. Right for any single-phase home wallbox and any UK EV.
- 11kW (16A three-phase) — only useful if both your wallbox and your car support three-phase charging. Three-phase domestic supply is rare in UK homes.
- 22kW (32A three-phase) — fastest AC speed possible. Only useful if your wallbox is 22kW capable and your car has a 22kW onboard charger (rare — most cap at 11kW even on premium models).
UK build quality checklist
- IEC 62196-2 (Mennekes Type 2) — the European standard. Genuine certification means the connector won't melt or seize.
- IP44 minimum for outdoor use; IP54+ on the connector boot for British rain.
- OFC pure copper conductors — cheap "CCA" copper-clad aluminium cables run hot and lose voltage; avoid them on EV duty.
- Flexible TPU sheathing rather than PVC — TPU stays supple in winter cold.
- Bag included — 8m of cable in a boot needs a bag or it's a tangle.
Storage: bag or holder
An 8m cable that lives in your boot benefits from a proper cable bag — keeps the connectors clean and stops the cable shedding mud through the boot lining. If you keep the cable at home next to the wallbox, a wall-mounted cable holder stops it tangling on the floor. Both small accessories make daily life with a long cable noticeably better.
