NACS / Tesla Connector Adapters

A NACS adapter converts Tesla's North American Charging Standard plug to Type 2, so a UK owner with an imported vehicle or US-market accessories can use the standard European wallbox network. NACS is now SAE J3400 in the US, and it will appear on more European Tesla and Ford-branded products through 2026 and 2027.

Choosing a charging cable

NACS (the North American Charging Standard, formerly known as the Tesla connector) is the small, sleek charging port used on every Tesla and on a growing list of US-market EVs from Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai-Kia, BMW and Mercedes for the 2025-onward model years. NACS adapters bridge the gap between NACS hardware and Type 2 / CCS Combo 2 cars, but in the UK, the use case is narrower than US headlines suggest.

NACS vs Type 2: the UK reality

The UK is a Type 2 / CCS Combo 2 market. Every UK EV sold new (including UK-spec Tesla Model 3, Model Y and Model S) has a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and CCS Combo 2 for DC fast charging. NACS is a North American standard. Tesla Superchargers in the UK use Type 2 / CCS plugs because they were retrofitted to European EU specs. So in the UK:

  • You don't need a NACS adapter to use a UK Tesla Supercharger: UK Superchargers are CCS Combo 2 native.
  • UK Teslas don't have NACS ports: they have Type 2 + CCS like every other UK EV.
  • NACS adapters are useful in the UK only if you've imported a US-market Tesla, Ford, Rivian, GM or other NACS-equipped car and need to charge it from UK Type 2 wallboxes or CCS public chargers.

The two NACS adapter types

There are two adapter formats, and they do opposite jobs:

  • NACS to Type 2 / CCS (NACS car → European charger): you have a US-import EV, you want to use UK chargers. This adapter goes on the car's port and accepts a UK Type 2 plug.
  • Type 2 / CCS to NACS (European car → NACS charger): you have a UK car, you want to use a US Supercharger if you ship the car to the States. This adapter goes on the European cable and plugs into a NACS car port.

Tesla supplies a Type 2 to NACS adapter as standard for cars exported to North America. CCS to NACS adapters are sold by Tesla and several third-party makers. NACS to Type 2 adapters for inbound US imports are more specialty, confirm fit with your specific car.

Power: AC vs DC adapters

NACS is unusual in that the same physical connector handles both AC charging and DC fast charging. Adapters must match the use case:

  • AC-only adapters: typically rated 7.4-11kW. Cheap, light, no liquid cooling. For home and Type 2 public AC use.
  • DC-capable adapters: rated 150kW+, liquid-cooled, expensive. Required for any Supercharger / DC fast use.

UK Tesla Magic Dock: not the same thing

Some UK Tesla Superchargers have a Magic Dock: a built-in CCS adapter that lets non-Tesla EVs use the Supercharger network. You don't need a personal adapter to use Magic Dock; the dock lives on the Supercharger and unlocks via the Tesla app. This is rolling out to a subset of UK sites, not all.

Why this collection might still be useful for UK buyers

The NACS adapter market is small but growing because:

  • US imports are common in performance niches (Lightning, Cybertruck, R1T, Hummer EV).
  • Used Teslas imported from North America sometimes arrive with NACS ports if they haven't been Euro-converted.
  • Travelling with the car to North America by sea freight requires the adapter on arrival.

Buying tips

  • Confirm AC or DC rating before buying: they cost very different amounts.
  • Check power level matches your car (some adapters cap at 80A AC or 250kW DC).
  • Buy from a UK retailer with proper warranty cover: Amazon imports often arrive without manufacturer support and the high currents involved make warranty critical.

Will this work with my car?
If your car uses Type 2 (most UK EVs from 2014+), yes. Check your charge port: hexagonal 7-pin = Type 2, square 5-pin = Type 1. Older Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and early BMW i3 use Type 1.
How long does delivery take?
In-stock items ship same-day if ordered before 16:00 on a working day. Standard delivery is next-working-day across mainland UK. Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and remote Highlands take 2-3 working days. Free delivery on orders over £150.
What is your returns policy?
30-day returns on unused, unregistered items in original packaging. We refund the full purchase price minus original outbound shipping. For items installed or registered to a customer account, only the manufacturer warranty applies.
What warranty do these come with?
