A 30m EV charging cable is the longest single-piece cable in mainstream production, beyond this, you're into custom-spec industrial cables or you're doing it wrong. 30m solves problems where the wallbox install location and the parking location are genuinely far apart, and there's no practical way to put a wallbox closer to the car.
The honest truth: 30m is rarely the right answer
Before buying a 30m cable, work through the alternatives:
- Could a second wallbox be installed nearer the car? A second tethered wallbox is £400-700 + install. Compared to using a 30m cable daily for years, the second wallbox is usually the better answer.
- Could the existing wallbox be relocated? Moving an existing wallbox is a half-day for an electrician, surprisingly often this is the cheapest fix.
- Is the parking spot fixed? If you can park 5m closer to the wallbox, a normal 5m cable does the job. Even if it's mildly inconvenient, the cable difference is significant.
- Is the wiring run from CU to wallbox the issue? Sometimes a long EV cable is being used to mask a bad install, the actual fix is rewiring to a wallbox closer to the parking spot.
If you've worked through these and 30m is still the right answer, this is the cable for you. Common scenarios:
- Smallholdings and farms: wallbox in the farmyard outbuilding, parking by the house.
- Rural courtyards with the only viable wallbox location on the far perimeter.
- Communal parking with one wallbox shared across distant bays.
Power and conductor sizing: get this right at this length
At 30m the conductor cross-section becomes meaningful. Don't buy a no-name 30m cable without published specs, voltage drop and thermal management at this length depend on it.
- 7.4kW (32A single-phase): needs 6mm² OFC copper minimum at 30m. 4mm² at 30m is borderline; many cheap 30m cables ship with 4mm² and run hot.
- 11kW (16A three-phase): 4mm² per core is fine at 30m.
- 22kW (32A three-phase): needs 6mm² per core; many manufacturers don't make a 22kW 30m cable at all due to weight and voltage-drop margins.
Cable weight at 30m is significant: a 7.4kW 30m cable weighs 7-8kg in OFC copper; the cheap CCA imitations are lighter but lose voltage and run hot. UK wiring regulations (BS 7671 18th Edition) implicitly assume Mode 3 cables conform to IEC 62196-2 and 62893; this is where a UK retailer with proper warranty cover matters.
Handling and storage
A 30m cable doesn't move with the car: it's effectively a fixed installation between the wallbox and a remote parking bay. Suggested setup:
- Mount on a wall reel at the wallbox end: a heavy-duty cable reel with a 360° pivot, or a static large-loop cradle.
- Run along a guarded route: clip to a wall or run through a buried duct rather than letting it lay across a driveway where it gets driven over.
- Cover the connector when not in use: the male Type 2 left exposed in UK weather will eventually corrode. A simple Type 2 socket cover takes 5 seconds to fit and adds years to the cable's life.
What to check before buying
- OFC pure copper conductors, sized to spec: request the datasheet, not just the listing.
- UK retailer with full warranty: at this price and length, no-warranty imports are the wrong choice.
- Verified IEC 62196-2 certification on the connectors, not just claimed.
- Compatibility with your specific wallbox: some wallboxes detect cable resistance and refuse to charge above a threshold; 30m is the length where this can become an issue with a few brands.
