Approaching its fiftieth birthday, the Range Rover still reads to a lot of people as the definitive luxury SUV: as comfortable carrying royalty as it is on a red carpet, yet able to cross a field like a tractor. Frugal is not a word usually attached to a large luxury SUV, but pairing a 2L petrol engine with an electric motor lets Land Rover claim 101 miles per gallon.

The P400e was the first Range Rover plug-in hybrid, its charging socket tucked neatly out of sight in the front grille. That grille came with the 2018 update applied across the range, inspired by the smaller Range Rover Velar, along with a restyled bumper, new tail lights and revised exhaust pipes. The bigger changes are inside. It is extremely plush, with wider and even more comfortable seats and the Velar's dual-screen entertainment system, which is also where the electric side of the car reports in.

There are a couple of modes to work with. The default is Parallel Hybrid, where the computer juggles the two power sources, or you can select EV. On longer journeys a save function holds the electric range back for when you reach the city: up to 31 miles, though weather and driving style move that figure. Predictive Energy Optimisation goes a step further, letting you pick a spot on the sat nav so the car works out a route to your destination and optimises fuel consumption along the way. Range and consumption both show in front of you and on the screen.

Around 90% of our journeys are under 15 miles a day, and that is exactly where a hybrid like this works brilliantly. Longer trips will cost you rather more, offset by those 31 miles of range that could cover most days on pure electric power. The habit worth building is plugging in each night, which lets you take advantage of off-peak electricity.

The 2L four-cylinder petrol engine and the electric motor together produce 399 horsepower, enough to feel quick off the mark, in fact only slightly quicker than the V8 diesel Range Rover. In town, switch to all electric and enjoy the silence.
