Vehicle to Load, sometimes called Vehicle to Device (V2D), turns the car into a portable mains supply. This cable does exactly that for the MG ZS (2022), MG 5 (facelifted 2023), MG4 (2022), MG Cyberster and MG Marvel R. Plug it into the Type 2 charge port, select the discharge option on the car's infotainment display, and you have a socket to work from. Load capacity is up to 2.5kW depending on the model, which is enough for camping kit well away from any hook-up, tools at the far end of a garden, or a kettle and a laptop on a long day out.

Important: a V2L cable must never be connected to another electrical system. There is no voltage or phase synchronisation, so doing this will void your vehicle warranty and can seriously damage both the connected system and the car.

Cable and rating

• 16A, 3G1.5, 10.5mm diameter
• IP44 rated: it will work in dusty conditions and shrug off splashes while mated, but the connection is not fully sealed and the cable must never be submerged

Looking after it

Keep the cable out of puddles. Storing it outside is fine. Fit the rubber dust cover whenever the cable is not in use, since debris collecting in the connector is easily avoided and easily regretted. Moisture is the problem we see most often, and the pin corrosion it causes is not covered by warranty.

Worth knowing about rain: water finds its way into the plug and the charge socket as you insert and remove it. The moment you open the charge port or unplug the car, rain lands on the pins and stays there until the next time you connect. A dry moment and a dust cap go a long way.
