Overview

A simple adapter power source (Hyundai, Kia and Genesis only)

This vehicle to load (V2L) cable, sometimes called vehicle to device (V2D), turns the car into a power source for household appliances. It suits the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kona Electric, IONIQ 6, IONIQ 9 and INSTER, the Kia EV3, EV6, EV9 and Niro EV 4, and the Genesis Electric GV60, Electric GV70 and Electric GV80. In short, any vehicle built on the E-GMP platform.

Using it is simple. Plug into your Type 2 charge port and press the button on the Type 2 connector to toggle the V2L function on and off. Depending on the car, you can connect up to 3kW of load through a UK 3-pin outlet, or 3.6kW through CEE and Schuko. Enough to run camping equipment out in the wilderness.

Important: a vehicle to load cable should never be connected to any other electrical system. There is no voltage or phase synchronisation, so doing so voids your vehicle warranty and has the potential to cause serious damage to both the connected system and the car.

What the IP44 rating means

IP44 (ingress protection) means the cable will operate in dusty conditions and will resist splashes of water while mated. The charging process is not fully water sealed, though, so the cable must never be submerged.

Looking after it

  • Keep the cable out of puddles. Stored outside is fine.
  • Fit the rubber dust cover when the cable is not in use, so debris cannot collect in the connector.
  • Moisture is the most common issue we see, and it corrodes the pins, which our warranty does not cover.

Worth knowing about charging in the rain: water can still reach the plug and the charging socket as you insert or remove it. As soon as the charge port is open, or the car is unplugged, rain lands on those pins and stays there until the next time you charge.

Installation

  1. 01Park up and leave the car in the mode its handbook specifies for discharge.
  2. 02Plug the connector into the car's charge port until the latch clicks.
  3. 03Enable discharge on the car - the infotainment menu or the button on the connector, depending on the model. See Specifications for this one.
  4. 04Check the socket is live before you plug anything in, and keep the outlet end dry and off the ground.

FAQs

Does my car use this cable?
If it is built on the E-GMP platform, yes. That covers the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kona Electric, IONIQ 6, IONIQ 9 and INSTER, the Kia EV3, EV6, EV9 and Niro EV 4, and the Genesis Electric GV60, Electric GV70 and Electric GV80.
How do I start the discharge?
Plug into the Type 2 charge port and press the button on the Type 2 connector. The same button toggles the V2L function back off when you are finished.
Why is the UK 3-pin outlet rated lower?
Depending on the car, you can connect up to 3kW of load through a UK 3-pin outlet, or 3.6kW through CEE and Schuko. If you are running something near the ceiling, the CEE or Schuko option gives a little more headroom.
Can I connect it to a fixed installation?
No. A vehicle to load cable should never be connected to any other electrical system. There is no voltage or phase synchronisation, so doing so voids your vehicle warranty and has the potential to cause serious damage to both the connected system and the car.
Does the car need V2L enabled?
Yes. The vehicle handles the discharge itself once you press the connector button, so the function has to be present. The cable gives you the outlet, not the capability.
How should I store it between uses?
Keep the cable out of puddles. Stored outside is fine. Fit the rubber dust cover when it is not in use so debris cannot collect in the connector. Moisture is the most common issue we see, it corrodes the pins, and our warranty does not cover that.
