Overview

The #1 is where Smart stopped being a city runabout brand and turned into something rather different. It charges on Type 2.

This is one of the rare cars where a three-phase lead earns its keep. Higher trims will accept up to 22kW on AC, which almost nothing else of this size manages, and at that rate a 22kW public post stops being a slow top-up and becomes genuinely quick. If you have one of those trims and you use those posts, buy the 32A three-phase lead.

At home the picture changes. A single-phase British house supplies around 7.4kW whatever the car is capable of, so the 32A single-phase cable is what most owners will actually be plugging in most nights.

Which cable to choose

  • Type 2 to Type 2. The everyday lead, for home wallboxes and public posts alike. 5m if the charger sits beside where you park, 10m if it is on the far wall or you use public bays.
  • Type 2 to 3-pin. A Mode 2 lead for a household socket. Slow at 2.3kW and not a main charger, but worth keeping in the boot.

Should I buy the three-phase cable for my Smart #1?
If you have one of the higher trims that accepts up to 22kW on AC and you use 22kW public posts, yes. That combination is rare on a car this size and it makes those posts genuinely quick.
What about charging at home?
A single-phase British house supplies around 7.4kW whatever the car is capable of, so the 32A single-phase cable is what most owners will actually be plugging in most nights.
Can I use one cable for both?
The three-phase lead works on single-phase supplies too, so owners who use both scenarios often keep the 32A three-phase cable as their only lead. If you never touch a 22kW post, the single-phase cable is the cheaper answer.
What is the 3-pin option?
A Mode 2 lead for a household socket. Slow at 2.3kW and not a main charger, but worth keeping in the boot.
