Overview

If your V5C says EX40 and the tailgate says XC40 Recharge, nothing has gone wrong. Volvo renamed the electric XC40 in 2024 and left the car alone.

It is the same 11kW onboard AC charger either way. On an ordinary single-phase home wallbox that caps at 7.4kW, which is what a 32A Type 2 lead delivers, and it is enough to refill the battery overnight on a cheap tariff. The 11kW figure only comes into play on three-phase, which almost no UK house has.

So the three-phase 22kW cable is for public posts and commercial car parks, not your drive. If you charge at home and top up on the road, the 32A single-phase lead is the one.

Which cable to choose

  • Type 2 to Type 2. 5m if the wallbox is beside the parking space, 10m if it is on the far wall or you use public bays where the post ends up on the wrong side.
  • Type 2 to 3-pin. A Mode 2 lead for a household socket. Slow, and not intended as your main charger, but worth having in the boot.

Every cable we sell is CE and TUV certified, IP55 rated against British weather, and carries a two-year warranty.

Features

  • Same car, new badge

Volvo renamed the electric XC40 to EX40 in 2024 without changing the hardware. One cable covers both names.

  • 32A single phase is the home answer

The car takes 11kW, but a UK single-phase house supplies 7.4kW. A 32A lead draws every watt of that.

  • Three-phase only pays off out of the house

The 22kW lead is worth it for 22kW public posts or a property with a genuine three-phase supply. On a normal home wallbox it charges no faster.

  • Certified and weather rated

CE and TUV certified, IP55 rated against British weather, and carries a two-year warranty.

Installation

  1. 01Unlock the car - most won't accept a cable while locked.
  2. 02Wallbox end first, then the car. Push until the latch clicks.
  3. 03Check the car shows a charging state before you walk away.
  4. 04Coil loosely into the bag - no tight figure-of-eights.

FAQs

Is the EX40 the same car as the XC40 Recharge?
Yes. Volvo renamed the fully electric XC40 to EX40 in 2024. The socket, the onboard charger and the cable you need are unchanged.
Which power rating should I buy?
The 32amp single-phase lead. It pulls the full 7.4kW a UK single-phase home supply can deliver, which is as much as the car will see on a standard wallbox.
Do I need the 22kW three-phase cable?
Only if you have a three-phase supply at the property, or you regularly use 22kW public posts. It will not charge any faster on a single-phase home wallbox.
What is the Type 2 to 3 Pin cable for?
It is a Mode 2 lead for a household socket, running at 2.3kW on the adjustable 6amp to 12amp setting. Slow, and not intended as your main charger, but worth having in the boot.
How quickly will it arrive, and what if it is wrong?
Orders placed before 4pm are dispatched the same day, UK delivery is free next working day on orders over £150, and you have 30 days to return it.

What customers say about us

  • First class service

First class service. Ordered 15m cable and it was delivered next day. Minor hiccup in that the accompanying bag was missing. Quick email to Jake at EV Cable Hub and the bag arrived next working day. 1st class product and even better customer service. Thank you.
