Overview

Why go tethered?

The main argument for a tethered Type 2 setup is simple: a cable that is attached to the unit is far harder to walk off with. Charging cables have become a target for thieves in the UK, seen as easy to take and worth good money, and a tethered lead removes most of that opportunity. It is not the only defence available, but it is the one that needs no thought from you once it is installed.

16 amp or 32 amp?

The honest answer is that it depends on your setup, and two numbers decide it. First, what is the maximum output of your charging station? If the unit tops out at 3.6kW, a 32amp tethered cable buys you nothing at all. Second, what will the car accept? A vehicle limited to 3.6kW is in the same position, and we would point you at a 16amp tethered lead. Where both the unit and the car can take more, the 32amp version is worth having. Our Type 2 charging cables cover both ratings.

Swapping a Type 1 tethered cable for Type 2

Good news first: yes, it can be done. It is just not as simple as swapping a phone charger for a laptop charger. Converting a charging station to take a Type 2 tethered cable is electrical work, so speak to the person who fitted the unit in the first place. They know the installation and can do it safely.

  2. 02Wallbox end first, then the car. Push until the latch clicks.
  3. 03Check the car shows a charging state before you walk away.
  4. 04Coil loosely into the bag - no tight figure-of-eights.

FAQs

Will this cable fit my car?
Yes, if your car has a Type 2 inlet. Almost every EV sold new in the UK since 2018 uses Type 2; Type 1 appears on older and imported models. Check your charge port has a 7-pin Type 2 socket, or use our reg checker.
Which cable length should I choose?
Most driveways are fine with 5m. Choose 7-10m if the charge point is wall-mounted away from where you park or your charge port is on the far side of the car, and 15-20m for on-street or awkward layouts. Available here in 5m, 10m.
Can I use it at public charge points as well as at home?
Yes. This is a Mode 3 Type 2 cable, so it works at your home wallbox and at any untethered public AC charge point. Rapid DC chargers (motorway) come with their own tethered cables, so you don't need one for those.
Is it safe to leave outside in the rain?
Yes. The cable and connectors are rated IP55 and built for -30°C to +60°C, so they're safe in UK rain, frost and snow. Don't submerge the connectors in standing water.
What warranty and delivery do I get?
Free next-working-day UK delivery on orders over £150, with 30-day returns on unused items. Warranty: 24 months (2 years) manufacturer warranty.

What customers say about us

  • First class service

First class service. Ordered 15m cable and it was delivered next day. Minor hiccup in that the accompanying bag was missing. Quick email to Jake at EV Cable Hub and the bag arrived next working day. 1st class product and even better customer service. Thank you.
