Jaguar I Pace Charging Cable

The I-Pace was Jaguar's first pure electric car, and they got it right at the first attempt. It is an SUV, it looks superb, and it uses two concentric electric motors, one on each axle, for permanent all-wheel drive. Never a cheap car, but for anyone who wants performance it delivers: 394bhp and 513lb ft of torque through a single-speed gearbox.

Charging it is straightforward once you know which lead you need. The I-Pace uses a Type 2 socket, so a Type 2 to Type 2 cable is what most owners end up buying.

Which cable should I buy for my I-Pace?

It depends on where you charge. With no charge point at home or work, a Type 2 to 3-pin lead lets you charge from an ordinary domestic socket without having a charging station fitted. If you do have a charge point, you want a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and for the shortest charge times at home or at work we would go for the 32A three-phase version.

How quickly will these cables charge the car?

That depends on more than the cable you choose. The I-Pace accepts up to 7.4kW on AC, which works out at a little over 13 hours from empty. To see that rate you need a charge point capable of 7.4kW and a 32A single-phase Type 2 cable, which is the sensible pairing for most UK homes.

Is charging getting any quicker?

Up to a point, yes. The car is supplied with a home charging cable that plugs straight into a domestic socket, and upgrading from it is worth doing. On a 50kW DC rapid charger of the kind found at most public charging stations, the I-Pace picks up as much as 168 miles of range for every hour on charge. At home, a wall box charging overnight is the better answer. Plenty of owners leave the home cable tethered and keep a second Type 2 lead in the boot for travel.

What if I forget to charge while I am out?

It is no different from running a petrol car dry: the vehicle stops. Like all EVs, the I-Pace has a battery management system that reports energy information as range depletes, and Eco Mode steps in where needed to stretch what is left until you reach a charging point and can plug in. That is the argument for keeping a 32A cable with you.

What if the car stands unused for months?

It will be fine. The I-Pace can be left unattended for six months. A top-up through the charging cable once a month is ideal, but the battery management system is electronically controlled and draws very little while the car is idle.
