Overview
Two things decide which cable a Hyundai Ioniq owner actually needs: whether there is a charge point on the wall at home, and how far the car sits from it. If the Ioniq is new to you and no charging station has been installed yet, start with a Type 2 to 3-pin cable. It plugs straight into an ordinary UK domestic socket, so the car is charging the day it arrives. If a charge point is already fitted, a 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the better buy. It connects directly to the unit and lets the Ioniq draw power at its best rate.
How to charge a Hyundai Ioniq
- Find the charging port. On the Ioniq it usually sits on the front left wing or the left-hand side of the car. A green light on the port illuminates once the car is plugged in.
- Open the port cover, either by pressing the button on the port or by pulling the release handle.
- Push the cable into the car's port until it is properly seated.
- Connect the other end to the charging station. Public units often ask you to swipe a card or enter a code before power flows.
- Charging begins on its own. The dashboard display shows the current status and an estimated time to full.
- The car stops charging automatically when the battery is full. Unplug at both ends and close the port cover.
How quickly does an Ioniq charge?
That depends on the charge point and on how empty the battery is. The Ioniq EV carries a 7.2 kW onboard charger, so 7.2 kW is the ceiling on AC no matter how the cable or wallbox is rated. On a home charging station, which is the most common setup, a full charge generally lands somewhere between 4 and 6 hours, stretching towards 6 to 8 hours from a low state of charge. Some later Ioniq models are fitted with a higher-powered onboard charger, which can shorten that, although it varies by model and by the equipment you plug into.
