Overview

For most British drivers, the Atto 3 was their first encounter with BYD. It uses a Type 2 socket and an onboard AC charger of around 7kW.

For anyone buying a cable, that single figure decides everything. Seven kilowatts is almost exactly what a single-phase UK home supplies, so a 32A single-phase lead pulls out everything the car has to give. Paying more gets you nothing: a three-phase cable will not speed an Atto 3 up, and neither will a 22kW post.

The 16amp cable will work perfectly well, but it halves your charging speed to save roughly thirteen pounds, which is rarely a good trade on a car this size.

Which cable to choose

  • Type 2 to Type 2. The everyday lead, for home wallboxes and public posts alike. 5m if the charger sits beside where you park, 10m if it is on the far wall or you use public bays.
  • Type 2 to 3-pin. A Mode 2 lead for a household socket. Slow at 2.3kW and not a main charger, but worth keeping in the boot.
