Overview
The Q3 TFSI e is Audi's first compact SUV to go plug-in hybrid, sharing its engine with the VW Golf GTE, so it is quick off the mark and offers several driving modes. For charging you have two options: a Type 2 to Type 2 lead for public and workplace posts and home wallboxes, or a Type 2 to 3-pin lead for a domestic socket. Both come in 5m and 10m.
The car accepts a maximum of 3.6/3.7kW, and that is the number that decides everything. A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable delivers all of it and takes the battery from empty to full in around four hours. A 32A three-phase 22kW lead gets you to exactly the same four hours, because the limit is the car, not the cable. We would spend the money on the 16A unless you are buying with a future EV in mind. These leads work at UK and EU standard posts, so workplace, public and household charging are all covered. Rubber caps protect both plugs from dust and weather when the cable is stored, the jacket is rated IP55 and the cable is specified from -30°C to +60°C. CE marked and TÜV certified. Three-phase option
Pick the 32A three-phase version to charge at up to 22kW where a three-phase supply is available. The single-phase versions charge at up to 7.2kW on a standard home wallbox.
Installation
- 01Unlock the car - most won't accept a cable while locked.
- 02Wallbox end first, then the car. Push until the latch clicks.
- 03Check the car shows a charging state before you walk away.
- 04Coil loosely into the bag - no tight figure-of-eights.
