Reading the current and voltage rating

The current rating is the single most important figure to match. It appears in amperes (A) and is usually the most prominently stamped figure on the jacket. The two standard values you will see are:

  • 16A: a 16A single-phase cable carries up to approximately 3.7 kW at 230V
  • 32A: a 32A single-phase cable carries up to approximately 7.4 kW at 230V

The voltage figure (250V for single-phase, 400V for three-phase) tells you which supply type the cable is rated for. Most UK home wallbox installations are single-phase, so 250V / 16A or 250V / 32A are the most common markings you will find.

You can replace a 16A cable with a 32A cable. A higher-rated cable used on a 16A charger will simply operate at 16A. The reverse is not recommended: a 16A cable on a 32A charger will throttle the charge rate and may run warm under sustained load.

Conductor cross-section and number of cores

The conductor cross-section (in mm²) tells you the thickness of the copper conductors inside the cable. This should match or exceed your original:

  • 2.5mm² is standard for 16A cables
  • 4mm² is standard for 32A cables (thicker conductors to handle higher current safely)

The core count tells you the cable’s phase configuration, and it is usually expressed as “3G” (three cores including earth, for single-phase) or “5G” (five cores, for three-phase). Most domestic UK replacements will be 3G.

IP rating, standards compliance, and cable length

The IP rating tells you how well the cable handles moisture and dust. IP55 means the cable is protected against water jets from any direction. The UK Type 2 standard (IEC 62196-2) explained

Since approximately 2018, every new electric vehicle sold in the UK has used the Type 2 connector (also called the Mennekes connector) as defined in IEC 62196-2. This seven-pin AC connector is the mandated standard for Mode 3 AC charging across the UK and EU, and it means that virtually all replacement cable purchases for cars registered post-2018 are Type 2 to Type 2.

Broadly yes: any Type 2 cable rated at or above your charger’s output will work. Per IEC 62196-2, all Type 2 connectors share the same seven-pin layout, so physical compatibility is guaranteed. The caveat is power rating: if your home charger delivers 7.4 kW (32A), your cable must be rated to at least 32A. A 16A cable will work but will throttle your charge speed to 3.7 kW.

Type 1 connectors (the five-pin SAE J1772 standard) are found on older imports: the Nissan Leaf in 24 kWh and 30 kWh variants, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, and the first-generation Mitsubishi i-MiEV. If you drive one of these, you need a Type 1 to Type 2 cable (Type 1 at the car end, Type 2 at the charger end).

One persistent error worth correcting: the BMW i3 uses a Type 2 inlet, not Type 1. If you own a BMW i3 and have been told you need a Type 1 cable, that advice is incorrect.

Single-phase vs three-phase: what your home charger supports

The vast majority of UK domestic wallbox installations are single-phase. On a single-phase supply, the maximum you can pull through a Type 2 cable is approximately 7.4 kW at 32A (230V × 32A = 7,360 W). A 16A cable on the same supply caps at roughly 3.7 kW.

Three-phase supplies, which allow up to 22 kW (400V × 32A × 3 phases), are available in some UK properties but are far less common in residential settings. If you have a three-phase wallbox, your replacement cable will need to be a five-core (5G) cable rated for three-phase use. Check your wallbox installation certificate or contact your installer if you are unsure which supply type you have.

Note that granny chargers (Mode 2 cables that plug into a standard 3-pin socket) are limited to 10A under UK electrical guidelines, or approximately 2.3 kW. These are not interchangeable with Mode 3 wallbox cables.

  • 5m: works for most UK driveways where the wallbox or socket is mounted close to where the car’s inlet sits when parked
