Why cable length matters more on the street than on a driveway

For on-street charging without a driveway, you need at least a 10m cable to reach from a kerbside parking space to a house-wall socket. A 15m cable gives you the reach for most UK terraced and semi-detached kerbside situations, as well as for connecting to public AC posts further from your parking spot. Most home driveway installations are fine with 5m; the on-street scenario is the reason longer cables exist.
The geometry of a typical UK terraced street makes this unavoidable. A house-wall socket sits perhaps 0.5-1m above ground level on the front elevation. The pavement is 1.5-2.5m wide. The kerbside parking space starts at the kerb. By the time you add the socket-to-plug reach inside the car, you need 8-10m just to cover the straight-line distance, and you should add margin for the cable protector ramp’s rise, any angled run, and a relaxed drape that avoids tension on the connectors.

At 15m and above, voltage drop is worth checking; a well-made cable from a reputable supplier will be specified to handle this within acceptable tolerances at 7kW single phase. Using public AC charging posts: the cable you must bring
Type 2 is the standard, but the post won’t have one
Public AC posts are untethered: you must bring your own Type 2 cable.

It is worth being explicit about the contrast: rapid DC chargers (CCS/CHAdeMO posts, typically 50kW and above) are almost always tethered, with the heavy DC cable fixed to the unit, so you simply plug it in. AC posts (the 7kW posts you find on residential streets, in supermarket car parks, and in local authority car parks) are the opposite. No cable. You need to bring one.
