Overview

In the UK the Jaecoo 7 is sold as a plug-in hybrid, and that changes what is worth buying.

It takes a Type 2 plug like any full EV, but the battery is a fraction of the size and the onboard charger is modest to match. A plug-in hybrid goes from empty to full in a couple of hours on almost any cable, which leaves the expensive options with nothing to do. The 16amp lead makes sense here in a way it rarely does on a full EV, and a 32A single-phase cable is as far up the range as anyone needs to go.

Skip the three-phase cable. The car cannot use it, and no amount of supply at the property will change that.

The 7 also supports vehicle-to-load, which calls for a discharge cable rather than a charging lead. Ours sit in the V2L adapters section.

Which cable to choose

  • Type 2 to Type 2. The everyday lead, for home wallboxes and public posts alike. 5m where the charger sits beside the car, 10m if it is on the far wall or you use public bays.
  • Type 2 to 3-pin. A Mode 2 lead for a household socket. Slow at 2.3kW and no substitute for a wallbox, but worth keeping in the boot.

  1. 01Unlock the car - most won't accept a cable while locked.
  2. 02Wallbox end first, then the car. Push until the latch clicks.
  3. 03Check the car shows a charging state before you walk away.
  4. 04Coil loosely into the bag - no tight figure-of-eights.

Does the UK Jaecoo 7 charge like a full EV?
