Tethered vs Untethered Charger: Which Wallbox Should You Choose?

Choosing a home wallbox sounds straightforward until someone asks: tethered or untethered? The terms matter more than most guides let on. A tethered wallbox has the cable built in: you just plug into your car and charge. An untethered (socketed) wallbox has a Type 2 socket instead, and you supply your own cable. Both will charge your EV at exactly the same speed. The difference lives in convenience, flexibility, cable length, security and, perhaps surprisingly, your public charging life too.


What “tethered” and “untethered” actually mean

Before weighing the trade-offs, it helps to be precise about what each term describes.

Tethered wallbox: convenience at a cost

A tethered wallbox has a Mode 3 charging cable permanently fixed to the unit. The cable terminates in a Type 2 connector (IEC 62196-2), which plugs directly into your car’s charging inlet. At home, you never handle a separate cable. It hangs on a hook or coils on the wall bracket, ready to plug in.

The convenience is real. But “tethered” contains a hidden word: fixed. The cable length is set at manufacture (typically 5 m or 7 m) and cannot be changed after installation. If your driveway layout changes, or you swap to a car with the charge port in a different position, you are locked into whatever length came with the unit.

Untethered (socketed) wallbox: flexibility with a trade-off

An untethered wallbox presents a Type 2 socket on its face. To charge, you plug one end of your own Mode 3 Type 2 cable into the wallbox socket and the other end into your car. The wallbox itself is identical in charging speed and safety compliance to a tethered unit. The difference is purely in how the cable connection is made.

The trade-off is that you must retrieve the cable, plug it in, and stow it again every session. In practice our customers tell us this adds about 20-30 seconds. In return, you can use any compliant cable length, swap to a longer or shorter cable at any time, and, as we’ll explain below, the same cable serves you at public charge points.

As the IET Code of Practice for EV Charging Equipment Installation, 5th edition (2023) makes clear, both configurations are fully compliant with UK installation standards; the choice is an owner preference, not a safety distinction.


The public-charging reality nobody mentions

This is the single most important factor most comparison guides miss entirely.

UK public AC posts are almost entirely untethered

The vast majority of public AC charge points across the UK are untethered: lamp-post chargers, car park posts, destination chargers. They present a Type 2 socket and expect you to bring your own cable. This is the standard the network operators have settled on, and it is unlikely to change.

CCS DC rapid chargers are an exception: they are almost always tethered (the cable is built into the rapid charger). But those are DC-only units and a separate topic. For all the AC public charging you will do on a lamp-post or destination post, you need a cable.

What this means if you choose a tethered home wallbox

If you choose a tethered wallbox, you will still need to own and carry a Type 2 cable for public AC charging. Full stop. A tethered home setup does not remove the cable from your life; it removes it from your driveway sessions only. If you ever charge at a supermarket, hotel, car park, or on-street post, you will need to know which EV charging cable you need and keep one in the boot.

This changes the calculus for many buyers. The “convenience” argument for tethered only holds at home. On the road, untethered wallbox owners and tethered wallbox owners are exactly equal: both need a cable.

Cable length: the hidden lock-in of a tethered setup

With a tethered wallbox, the cable length you get at installation is the cable length you have forever.

Most driveways are fine with 5 m. If the wallbox is positioned at the back of a garage or the car parks nose-in to the charger, 7 m is often the better choice. With an untethered wallbox, length is never a permanent decision. You can start with a 5 m cable today and swap to a 7 m or 10 m cable if you change car, move house, or reconfigure your driveway: no electrician required, no new wallbox, just a different cable.

Theft and security: which option is safer?

Tethered cables introduce a theft and vandalism exposure that untethered setups do not.

A tethered cable is exposed on your driveway whenever a car is not plugged in. It can be cut: the cable itself has resale value for copper. When a car is plugged in, the connector is locked into the vehicle inlet (the car’s electronics lock it), but the cable can still be targeted at the wallbox end.

Untethered setups are different. When the cable is stowed in the boot or inside the house, there is nothing on the wallbox to cut or steal. The wallbox socket itself has no resale value to a cable thief.

The theft trade-off is real but often overstated. A quality cable lock addresses the mid-charge removal risk for both setups. The main vulnerability of a tethered installation is the exposed cable when the car is away, and that matters most in high-crime areas or where the wallbox is visible from a public road.
