Overview

Why go tethered?

A tethered charging solution keeps the lead permanently attached to your charge point, which removes the single easiest thing for a thief to walk off with. Cable theft is a genuine problem in the UK: leads are valuable, quick to grab and, until fairly recently, rarely locked away. Tethering will not make you invulnerable, but it takes you off the easy-target list. It is also less faff day to day, because there is no cable to fetch from the boot every evening.

16 amp or 32 amp?

Two questions settle it. First, what will your charging station actually deliver? If the unit is limited to 3.6kW there is nothing to gain from a 32 amp lead, because the power simply is not there to draw. Second, what will your car accept on AC? A vehicle that caps out at 3.6kW will charge at 3.6kW whatever you plug into it, so a 16 amp tethered cable is the sensible spend.

This 15m tethered lead is Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single-phase, rated at 7.2kW. It uses 2.5-6mm² copper conductors sized to the current rating, is IP55 rated and run-over proof, works from -30°C to +60°C, and is built to IEC 62196-2 (Type 2 / MENNEKES) with seven pins. CE marked, TÜV certified, and covered by a 24 month manufacturer warranty. Fifteen metres is a lot of reach, which is what you want for a shared driveway, a detached garage, or a charge point that ended up on the wrong wall.

Can I swap a Type 1 tethered cable for a Type 2 one?

In principle yes, but it is not the plug-and-play job that changing a phone charger for a laptop charger would be. Swapping the tethered lead on a charging station means opening up the unit, so it is work for a qualified electrician. Your best first call is whoever installed the charge point, since they will know the model and the safest way to change it. The rest of the range is in Type 2 charging cables.

FAQs

Will this cable fit my car?
Yes, if your car has a Type 2 inlet. Almost every EV sold new in the UK since 2018 uses Type 2; Type 1 appears on older and imported models. Check your charge port has a 7-pin Type 2 socket, or use our reg checker.
Which cable length should I choose?
Most driveways are fine with 5m. Choose 7-10m if the charge point is wall-mounted away from where you park or your charge port is on the far side of the car, and 15-20m for on-street or awkward layouts. Available here in 15m.
Can I use it at public charge points as well as at home?
Yes. This is a Mode 3 Type 2 cable, so it works at your home wallbox and at any untethered public AC charge point. Rapid DC chargers (motorway) come with their own tethered cables, so you don't need one for those.
Is it safe to leave outside in the rain?
Yes. The cable and connectors are rated IP55 and built for -30°C to +60°C, so they're safe in UK rain, frost and snow. Don't submerge the connectors in standing water.
What warranty and delivery do I get?
Free next-working-day UK delivery on orders over £150, with 30-day returns on unused items. Warranty: 24 months (2 years) manufacturer warranty.

What customers say about us

  • First class service

First class service. Ordered 15m cable and it was delivered next day. Minor hiccup in that the accompanying bag was missing. Quick email to Jake at EV Cable Hub and the bag arrived next working day. 1st class product and even better customer service. Thank you.
