Overview
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is not the most striking car on the road, but it hides plenty. It is loaded with technology, rides comfortably and works as a genuinely capable SUV, easy to drive despite its size and impressively economical both around town and out on the motorway. Four-wheel drive comes as part of the deal. Little wonder it sold in the numbers it did to buyers moving into hybrids. Which cable does the Outlander PHEV need?
A Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable, which covers domestic, commercial and smart charging stations alike. A 16amp cable already reaches the car's maximum speed, and a 32amp cable charges at exactly the same rate, so there is nothing to gain by paying more here. Should I worry about emissions?
No. Some diesel rivals return plenty of miles to the gallon, but at 40g/km the Outlander PHEV runs clean and keeps running costs down.
Is it economical?
For a car this size, surprisingly so. The hybrid system allows almost 30 miles on electric power alone, and combined with the petrol engine a careful driver can better 100mpg.
How do you actually charge one?
Two routes. Most owners fit a charging station where they live, buy an Outlander charging cable, connect it to the unit and let the car take its maximum rate. The alternative is a 3-pin to Type 1 cable, which plugs straight into a standard domestic socket with nothing to install. It takes longer, but it works. The battery will also take a charge from a dedicated wall charger, and quick chargers keep appearing at supermarkets and on garage forecourts. The car uses two charging standards for its inlets, and both types of cable should have been supplied with it.
How long does a charge take?
That depends on the method. A 3-pin Outlander cable is the slowest of the lot at 3kW and takes 5 hours. The fastest standard AC rate the car will accept is 7kW, which fills it in 3.5 hours, and for that you need at least a 16amp cable.

What are the cables themselves like?
Conductors are 2.5 to 6mm² copper depending on current rating, the outer jacket is IP55 rated against weather and dust, and the build is run-over proof if a wheel finds it on the drive. Operating range is -30°C to +60°C. Everything is CE marked and TÜV certified to IEC 62196-2, and carries a 24 month manufacturer warranty. Choose 5m or 10m.
What MPG will I see?
As with any petrol or diesel car, that comes down to how and where you drive. Rush hour in the city will hurt it, a quiet motorway run will not. As an average, 140 mpg combined is realistic, which saves a fortune against a standard petrol model.
