The Type 2 connector has seven pins arranged in a characteristic D-shape: three phase lines (L1, L2, L3), a neutral (N), a protective earth (PE), a control pilot (CP), and a proximity pilot (PP). CCS for DC rapid charging
For DC rapid charging, all VW ID models use a CCS (Combined Charging System) inlet. This sits below the Type 2 socket on the car and adds two large DC pins. At a rapid charger the cable is tethered — you do not bring your own cable for DC charging. How much AC power can a VW ID actually accept?
This is where many VW ID owners get caught out — not by the car, but by the cable.
According to Volkswagen UK manufacturer onboard-charger spec sheets, all MEB-platform ID models are fitted with an 11kW three-phase onboard AC charger as standard. That applies to every trim level, including base variants. There is no optional upgrade and no higher specification to unlock — 11kW is simply what the platform delivers.
What this means in practice: to reach 11kW at a compatible wallbox or public post, you need both a three-phase supply and a 3-phase (5-pin) Type 2 cable. If either element is single-phase, the delivered power drops.
11kW three-phase across all models — no upspec needed
The MEB (Modularer E-Antriebs-Baukasten) platform is the shared architecture underpinning the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID.Buzz. Because onboard AC charging hardware is baked into the platform rather than specified per model, the 11kW three-phase capability is identical across the range.
This is a meaningful piece of information that many buying guides omit: you do not need to step up to a higher trim or pay for an optional charging package to get 11kW. Every current UK-spec VW ID does it.
Why a single-phase cable caps you at 7.4kW even on a 22kW post
Here is the mechanism that catches people out. When you plug a single-phase Type 2 cable into your VW ID, the car’s onboard charger only engages one phase — because that is all the cable can carry. Result: 7.4kW maximum, regardless of what the wallbox or public post is rated at.
A 22kW public post is three-phase. But if your cable is single-phase, you still receive 7.4kW. The post’s three-phase capacity is simply unavailable to you.
Flip the scenario: a 3-phase cable on a single-phase wallbox delivers 7.4kW — not 11kW, because the supply is single-phase. The cable is not limiting you here; the supply is. The cable is simply ready when your supply catches up.

Which VW ID model has which charge port position?
All five models share the same charging standard, but the physical position of the charge port differs — and that directly affects which cable length you should buy.

ID.3 — driver-side rear
The ID.3’s charge port sits at the rear on the driver’s side. For most UK driveways where the wallbox is on the driver’s side, a 5-metre cable reaches without fuss. If your wallbox is on the opposite side — or you park nose-in when the wallbox is at the rear — allow for 7 metres.
ID.4 and ID.5 — centre rear
The ID.4 and ID.5 share a centre-rear charge port, which gives the most consistent cable run regardless of which side the wallbox is on. Five metres is usually sufficient. The ID.5’s coupe-style roofline does not affect port position.
ID.7 — rear
The ID.7’s port is at the rear. Being a larger saloon, there is more car to accommodate, but 5 metres covers the typical driveway run comfortably. If your wallbox is mounted at the front of your garage and you reverse in, measure the full run before ordering.
ID.Buzz — rear-left
The ID.Buzz deserves a special mention. As the newest and largest addition to the MEB family — a proper people carrier with a correspondingly larger battery — the Buzz’s charge port is at the rear-left. Its size means the cable run from a wallbox on the right side of a driveway is longer than you might expect. We suggest treating 7 metres as the default for ID.Buzz owners rather than 5.
What cable length do I need for my Volkswagen ID?
The simple answer is 5 metres for most VW ID drivers, and 7 metres if your setup has any of the following: an ID.Buzz, a wallbox mounted on the far side of your driveway, a garage where you park nose-in, or a charge port that faces away from the wallbox.

What we see from our own customer data at EV Cable Hub is that ordering too short is the most common cable regret — particularly among ID.3 owners who have a wallbox on the passenger side. Five metres looks generous on paper and occasionally falls short in practice. When in doubt, 7 metres.
Does a new Volkswagen ID come with a charging cable?
Granny cable (Mode 2) — not supplied as standard in 2025/26
This is one of the clearest gaps between buyer expectation and reality. As of 2025–26, Volkswagen does not include a Mode 2 granny cable (IEC 62752) with new VW ID models in the UK. It is not in the boot, not in the charging kit, and not a dealer-fitted default. If you drive your new ID home and plug a household 3-pin socket into the wall, you will be searching for a cable you do not have.
A granny cable connects the Type 2 inlet on the car to a standard 13A domestic socket using Mode 2 safety electronics. It charges slowly — around 1.8–2.3kW — but it is genuinely useful as a backup when a wallbox or public charger is not available. You will need to buy one separately.
What to look for if you’re buying used
Used VW ID models sold privately or through non-VW channels may or may not include a granny cable. It is worth asking explicitly during any used purchase, as it is a £50–£150 item to replace. A Type 2 untethered cable for public charging is a separate item entirely and is almost never included with used sales.

Buy a 3-phase (5-pin) Type 2 cable, either 5m or 7m depending on your driveway layout. Here is why:
- All VW ID models have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. A 3-phase cable is the only way to access it fully.
- On a single-phase supply, a 3-phase cable delivers 7.4kW — identical to what a single-phase cable would give you. There is no penalty for owning a 3-phase cable on a single-phase installation.
- If you ever install a three-phase supply, upgrade your wallbox, or charge at a 22kW public post, a 3-phase cable is already future-proofed. A single-phase cable permanently caps you at 7.4kW in those situations.
The only scenario where a single-phase cable makes sense is if you are entirely certain you will never use a three-phase supply and want to save a small amount on the cable purchase. For most VW ID owners, that trade-off does not make sense.
