For ten years we have sold wallboxes as if they were hardware. They aren't. They never were. The wallbox is a meter, a permission slip, an interface to the grid: the device through which a domestic electricity supply is repurposed as a transport fuel. The hardware is incidental. The grid is the product.
This was always true in some abstract sense. What's changed in 2026 is that it is now true in a literal, billable, contractual sense. Octopus Intelligent does not sell electricity at a fixed price; it sells access to the cheapest fifteen-minute windows in the merit order, and it uses your wallbox as the negotiation surface.
Bidirectional, finally
The most interesting thing about V2H, or vehicle-to-home, is not that it lets you power your kettle from your car. It's that it changes the economics of charging. If your car can sell electricity back to the grid at peak times, the duty cycle of your wallbox doubles. The cost of capital for the hardware halves. The case for owning expensive hardware (rather than renting cheap hardware from your energy supplier) becomes harder to make.
The hardware is incidental. The grid is the product.
UK regulation has been a brake on this for years. The G99 connection rules, the metering requirements, the limited tariff support: all of these are loosening in 2026. The first commercially deployed V2H tariff is expected by the autumn. The hardware is mostly ready. The market is not.
We expect, over the next eighteen months, to see the wallbox market split. The cheapest end will become a commodity, distributed by energy suppliers as a loss-leader to capture customers onto smart tariffs. The premium end will become a piece of capital equipment whose value is measured in lifecycle revenue, not purchase price. The middle will compress.
What we tell our customers, when they ask, is this: buy hardware that works with whatever the grid does next. Open protocols. OCPP. V2H-ready firmware. A manufacturer that publishes a roadmap. The wrong wallbox in 2026 is not the one that can't charge your car. It is the one that can't change.
