The Tesla Model Y is the UK’s best-selling electric car, and yet we still get a steady stream of messages from new owners asking why there’s no cable in the box. There isn’t one. Tesla dropped the included charging cable from UK deliveries, and the optional Mobile Connector they sell separately is, frankly, expensive for what it is. Here’s what you actually need: a Type 2 Mode 3 cable, 32A, ideally three-phase, and here is why the port location matters more than most people realise.
No cable in the box, and the Mobile Connector isn’t the answer
Tesla no longer includes any charging cable with UK Model Y deliveries. Not a Mode 3 cable for public chargers, and (crucially) not even a Mode 2 “granny cable” for emergency three-pin use. If you took delivery in 2026, you received the car with precisely zero charging hardware. That is not a mistake or an oversight: it is now standard Tesla UK policy.
Tesla does sell a solution of sorts. The Mobile Connector, their branded Mode 2 granny cable, is available separately for approximately £130-£160. For that price you get a cable that trickle-charges from a domestic three-pin socket at around 2.3kW. It is a genuine last-resort backup, but deeply unsuitable as your primary charging method. The correct solution for a UK Model Y owner is a dedicated 32A Type 2 Mode 3 cable, the kind that connects your home wallbox (or a public AC post) directly to the car. This is what you should buy first, before anything else.
The Model Y’s combined inlet: Type 2 AC and CCS Combo 2
There is one physical charge port on the Tesla Model Y. It sits at the rear-left of the vehicle and handles both AC charging and DC rapid charging through the same aperture. This is called a CCS Combo 2 inlet: a design that incorporates the standard Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) AC connector in the upper section, with two additional DC pins in a lower housing.
What this means in practice:
- For AC charging (home wallbox, public AC post): you plug a standard Type 2 cable into the upper section. Any Type 2 Mode 3 cable works. There is nothing proprietary about it, no “Tesla cable” required.
- For DC rapid charging (public rapid chargers): a CCS Combo 2 cable, which engages the full inlet including the DC pins, is used. At Tesla Superchargers, this cable is permanently tethered to the charger unit.
This single-port design occasionally causes confusion. Some owners arrive at a Type 2 public charger expecting a separate DC inlet and can’t find it. There isn’t one. Charging speed: 11kW onboard, not 22kW
This is a point where a surprising number of websites, including some that sell EV cables, get the Model Y wrong. The claim “charges at up to 22kW AC” is incorrect for the Model Y. Per Tesla’s published onboard charger specifications, the Model Y’s AC onboard charger is rated at 11kW (three-phase). That is the hard ceiling. You cannot exceed it regardless of what infrastructure or cable you use.
- Home single-phase wallbox (32A, 7.4kW): car accepts 7.4kW, ~0-100% in 9h, cable: 32A Type 2 single or 3-phase
- Public 3-phase post (22kW rated): car accepts 11kW (onboard limit), ~0-100% in ~6h, cable: 32A 3-phase Type 2
- Tesla Supercharger V3 (250kW DC): up to ~170-250kW DC, ~15-25 min to 80%, cable: tethered at charger, none to buy
In practical terms, what this means for cable choice:
- At a standard UK home wallbox (single-phase, 7.4kW): the Model Y accepts 7.4kW. A full charge from near-empty takes roughly nine hours, or overnight in one plug-in session.
- At a public 3-phase AC post (typically 22kW rated): the Model Y’s onboard charger still caps at 11kW. The charger offers more than the car can accept, but you benefit: full charge time drops to around six hours.
- At a Tesla Supercharger (DC, up to 250kW V3): the onboard AC charger is bypassed entirely. DC power goes directly to the battery pack at rates up to around 170-250kW, giving roughly 15-25 minutes to 80%.
The practical upshot: if you want to get the most from public 3-phase posts, you need a three-phase capable cable. If you only ever charge at home on a single-phase wallbox, a single-phase cable is sufficient. But three-phase costs only around £20 more and future-proofs you.
Port-side matters: the rear-left charge point and getting your length right
The Tesla Model Y’s charge port is at the rear-left of the vehicle. In a UK right-hand-drive car, the driver sits on the right, but the charge port is on the left physical side of the car’s tail, the same position it occupies on left-hand-drive Models sold elsewhere. This is not intuitive for UK drivers who expect driver-adjacent features to be on the right.
Why does this matter? Because it directly affects what cable length you need.
- Charge port: rear-left; Wallbox same side as port: 5m cable recommended; Wallbox opposite side or front of garage: 7m cable recommended; On-street/awkward: 10m
Here is how to think about length for a typical UK driveway setup:
- 5m: Most driveways. If your wallbox is mounted on the left-hand wall or the left side of a garage (i.e., the same side as the charge port), 5m reaches comfortably without the cable trailing across the floor.
- 7m: If your wallbox is on the right-hand side of the driveway, at the front of a garage (port faces inward), or if a second vehicle is ever likely to be parked alongside, 7m gives you the slack you need.
- 10m: On-street parking, rented spaces, or any situation where the charger is not directly adjacent to where the car parks. Ten metres is generally the minimum sensible choice here.
Getting length wrong is expensive. A cable that is 1m too short means re-routing or replacing it, and a cable that is 3m too long creates a trip hazard and excess coiling that can cause heat build-up at high current. Single-phase vs three-phase: which cable to choose
For the Tesla Model Y, we recommend a 32A three-phase Type 2 cable for the majority of buyers. Here is the reasoning:
Single-phase (32A, 7.4kW): Works perfectly with every UK home wallbox. The Model Y will charge at 7.4kW, capped by the wallbox output and the UK grid’s single-phase supply, not the car. If you only ever charge at home and have no plans to use public 3-phase posts, this is all you need technically.
Three-phase (32A, 11kW): The same cable also works with every home single-phase wallbox: the car and charger negotiate automatically, and you still get 7.4kW at home. The difference is at public 3-phase posts, where a three-phase cable lets the Model Y pull its full 11kW, cutting charge time by around three hours compared with single-phase. The premium is modest, roughly £20 over a comparable single-phase cable.
For most UK Model Y owners, the three-phase cable is the better buy. Public charging infrastructure is rapidly expanding, and 3-phase posts are increasingly common on motorways, retail parks, and workplace chargers. Buying three-phase once is cheaper than upgrading the cable later.
A note on 22kW-rated cables: You may see these at a higher price. They are designed for vehicles with 22kW onboard chargers such as the Renault Zoe. The Model Y will still cap at 11kW regardless of cable rating. A standard 32A three-phase cable is the right specification here and costs less.

What about Tesla Superchargers?
You do not need to buy anything for Supercharging. Every Tesla Supercharger, V2 and V3 stalls alike, has a tethered CCS Combo 2 cable permanently attached to the unit. When you pull up to a Supercharger, you take the cable from the charger, open your Model Y’s combined charge port flap (via the app, the touchscreen, or by pressing the port itself), and plug in. The CCS connector engages both sections of the combined inlet simultaneously.
Supercharger cables are not removable, not available for purchase, and not something you store in your boot. They stay at the charger. The only cable you need to buy is your AC Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.
