Hyundai Ioniq Charging Cable: Type 2 Guide for Ioniq 5, 6, and 9

All Ioniq models use the same 32A 3-phase Type 2 cable. Here's the 11kW charging truth, rear-right port implications, V2L adapter guide, and Ioniq 9 note.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 are two of the most talked-about electric cars in the UK — and both share the same core question: what charging cable do I need? The answer is simpler than you’d expect. Both use a standard Type 2 inlet, 11kW onboard, three-phase if you want the most out of it. What catches people out is the charge port location — and the V2L adapter that turns your car into a mobile power station.

Which cable do Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 9 need?

The short answer: a 32A three-phase Type 2 (IEC 62196-2) Mode 3 cable. That applies to all three models. There is no “Hyundai special” connector — the Ioniq range uses the same standard Type 2 inlet found on the vast majority of European EVs.

E-GMP platform means identical AC charging specs across models. According to Hyundai’s published Ioniq charging specifications, every Ioniq in the current line-up — 5, 6, and 9 — has an 11kW three-phase AC onboard charger. The cable you buy for your Ioniq 5 today will work perfectly on your Ioniq 6 or a friend’s Ioniq 9.

What about the granny cable? Neither the Ioniq 5 nor the Ioniq 6 includes a granny (three-pin to Type 2) cable in the UK delivery box. If you need occasional slow-charge backup capability from a domestic socket, that’s a separate purchase.


The 11kW onboard charger: what you get at home vs public posts

At home on a single-phase wallbox: Most UK home wallboxes are single-phase, which means the maximum charge rate is 7.4kW (32A × 230V × 1 phase). The Ioniq’s 11kW charger accepts whatever the supply provides — so at home, you’ll see 7.4kW regardless of the cable rating.

At three-phase public posts: Where a three-phase 22kW public AC post is available (increasingly common at supermarkets, car parks, and destination sites), a three-phase Type 2 cable lets the Ioniq draw up to 11kW. A single-phase cable at the same post would limit you to 7.4kW. This is why we recommend a three-phase 32A cable as standard — you’re future-proofed for the post network without paying a premium for the three-phase supply at home.

800V E-GMP architecture: what it means for charging

The 800V platform is a DC story, not an AC story. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of the Ioniq range, and it’s worth being direct about it.

When you see “800V architecture” or “E-GMP platform” mentioned in Hyundai’s marketing, it refers to the battery system voltage. That architecture makes ultra-rapid DC charging possible — the Ioniq 5 can accept up to approximately 220kW peak at compatible DC chargers; the Ioniq 6 up to around 230kW peak, per Hyundai’s published Ioniq charging specifications. At those speeds, adding roughly 100 miles of range in ten minutes becomes realistic.

For your home wallbox and public AC posts, the 800V architecture changes nothing. AC charging is governed by the onboard charger — which steps down from whatever the post provides. Whether your car is 400V or 800V under the bonnet, a Type 2 cable delivers AC power the same way. The 32A three-phase cable we recommend is the same cable you’d use on any 11kW EV.

DC rapid charging uses a CCS Combo 2 inlet — not a cable you carry. CCS posts are tethered, so you just plug the post’s own cable into your car. No action needed from your side beyond showing up.


Charge port location: rear-right and why it affects cable length

Both the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 have their charge port at the rear-right — that’s the driver’s side rear quarter panel in UK right-hand-drive specification. This is consistent with Hyundai’s E-GMP design across the range.

Why this matters: most home wallboxes are mounted on a garage wall or exterior house wall, and the position of the port relative to your wallbox determines how long a cable you need.

  • Wallbox on the right side of your driveway (same side as the charge port): a 5m cable is usually sufficient for both Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
  • Wallbox on the left side of your driveway, or at the front of a garage: go to 7m. The cable needs to reach across or around the vehicle.
  • Ioniq 9 (large 3-row SUV): we recommend 7m as a minimum regardless of wallbox position. The sheer length of the vehicle adds reach requirements that can catch people out with a 5m cable.

If you’re uncertain, 7m is the safe default. A slightly longer cable adds minimal cost and can be coiled neatly; a cable that’s half a metre too short on a cold morning is genuinely frustrating.


V2L on Ioniq 5, 6, and 9: how the adapter works

V2L (vehicle-to-load) lets your Ioniq power external devices — kettles, power tools, camping equipment, or in emergencies, household appliances — directly from the car’s battery. All three models support it: Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 9.

The mechanism is the ICCU. The E-GMP platform includes an Integrated Charging Control Unit that works bi-directionally. During normal charging, the ICCU converts incoming AC to DC to charge the battery. In V2L mode, it reverses: converting DC battery power back to AC output. The output rating is around 3.6kW — enough to run a fridge, charge laptops, power a projector, or keep a camping site running.

External V2L: the adapter plugs into the Type 2 inlet. This is the same Type 2 socket on the rear-right panel that you charge from. The V2L adapter slots in, presents a standard 13A socket (or two, depending on the adapter version), and the car’s ICCU does the rest.

Internal V2L socket: some trim levels include a built-in socket beneath the rear seat or inside the boot. This is particularly useful for Ioniq 9 owners given the cavernous rear cargo area. Check your vehicle specification to confirm whether your trim level has it.

Is the V2L adapter included?

It depends on specification and when your car was delivered. This is one of the questions our own returns and warranty data at EV Cable Hub confirms comes up repeatedly — buyers discover at a campsite or power cut that they don’t actually have the adapter they expected.

Some Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 variants include the external V2L adapter as standard; others list it as an optional extra or dealer accessory. The position has shifted across model years and trim levels.

What to do before you need it: check your original order confirmation for a V2L adapter line item, and look through your vehicle handover pack. If neither mentions it, physically check the car’s storage compartments — it’s a small rectangular adapter that sometimes gets tucked away. If it’s not there and your specification should have included it, contact your supplying dealer before the warranty period closes.

An 800V car like the Ioniq 5 can accept much higher DC power at ultra-rapid chargers (up to approximately 220kW peak) compared to a 400V car at the same charger. For your home wallbox and public AC posts, the 800V architecture makes no difference — you still charge via a standard Type 2 cable at up to 11kW.


The bottom line

Every Hyundai Ioniq — 5, 6, or 9 — needs the same cable: a 32A three-phase Type 2 Mode 3.
