Overview

Charge your EV from an ordinary continental European socket. Pack it when the car goes to France, Germany, Spain, Italy or the Netherlands and the only power at the other end is a wall socket.

Schuko, from the German Schutzkontakt, is the round two-pin plug with earth clips on the sides used across most of mainland Europe. A UK granny charger will not fit one, and a travel adapter rated for a phone is not built to carry hours of continuous charging current. This one is: a Mode 2 in-cable control box handles the handshake with the car, provides residual current protection, and monitors the temperature of the supply plug while charging.

  • Vehicle connector: Type 2 or Type 1
  • Supply plug: Schuko (CEE 7/4, European 2-pin)
  • Up to 3kW, 13A
  • Mode 2 with in-cable control box, to IEC 62752
  • Lengths from 2m to 30m
  • IEC 62196-2 (Type 2), CE marked

Pick your vehicle connector and length above. Type 2 suits almost every EV sold new in the UK since 2018, while Type 1 covers older Japanese and American designs. The longer lengths are there for awkward gîte and hotel car parks. For charging from UK sockets, see our granny chargers.

Features

  • Fits sockets across mainland Europe

Schuko and compatible sockets are standard in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Austria and most of the rest of the continent.

  • Built for hours of continuous load

A travel adapter is designed for short bursts. This lead is rated to carry charging current for a full overnight session.

  • Temperature monitored plug

Older continental wiring varies enormously. The unit watches the plug and backs off if the socket starts to warm up.

  • Refuses to charge on a bad circuit

If the supply is not properly earthed the control box will not start. That is a safety feature, not a fault.

Installation

  1. 01Unlock the car - most won't accept a cable while locked.
  2. 02Wallbox end first, then the car. Push until the latch clicks.
  3. 03Check the car shows a charging state before you walk away.
  4. 04Coil loosely into the bag - no tight figure-of-eights.

FAQs

Will this work in the UK?
No. UK sockets are the three pin BS 1363 pattern. For charging at home in the UK you want a granny charger with a UK plug. This lead is for continental European sockets.
How fast will it charge?
Up to about 3kW, which is roughly 10 to 12 miles of range an hour, or 80 to 100 miles overnight. It is a top-up lead rather than a fast charge.
Which countries does Schuko cover?
France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland, Poland and most of central and southern Europe. Denmark and Italy have local variants, so check before you travel.
It will not start charging at my hotel. Why?
The most common cause is an unearthed circuit, which the control box will refuse to charge from. Older properties in France and Spain sometimes have these. Try a different socket and tell the owner.
Which vehicle connector do I need?
Type 2 for almost every EV sold new in the UK since 2018. Type 1 for the older Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and first generation BMW i3.

Compatibility

  • All Type 2 electric vehicles (UK and EU, most post-2018)
  • Nissan Leaf 2011-2017 (Type 1)
  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Mk1 (Type 1)
  • BMW i3 2013-2017 (Type 1)
  • European Schuko CEE 7/4 sockets
  • Holiday lets, hotels and gîtes across mainland Europe
Type 2 / 30m £392.99

What customers say about us

  • First class service

First class service. Ordered 15m cable and it was delivered next day. Minor hiccup in that the accompanying bag was missing. Quick email to Jake at EV Cable Hub and the bag arrived next working day. 1st class product and even better customer service. Thank you.
