Overview
The A3 e-tron and the A3 TFSI e both charge through a Type 2 socket, and we supply the lead in 5m and 10m. Both cars cap AC charging at 3.7kW per hour, which is why we steer A3 owners towards the Type 2 to Type 2 16A cable. Paying more for a 32A three-phase cable rated at 22kW gains you nothing on this car: it will fill the battery in exactly the same time, because the ceiling is set by the vehicle, not the lead.
The cable meets UK and EU charging point standards, so it behaves the same on a workplace post, a home wallbox or a public bay. Rubber covers protect the connectors when the cable is coiled away, the sheath is thick and hard-wearing, and the assembly is fully weatherproof, CE marked and TUV certified.
On length, 5m is plenty when the car parks nose-on to the charger and the socket sits on the same side. Go to 10m if the wallbox is on the far wall of the garage, if you reverse onto the drive, or if you use public bays where the post is rarely exactly where you want it. If you are genuinely torn between the two, the extra reach of the 10m is the one people regret buying less often.

What does a full charge cost?
The A3 Sportback e-tron carries an 8.8 kWh battery. Cost depends on whether you plug in at home on a domestic tariff or pay public rates, and home is comfortably the cheaper of the two. Reckon on 5 to 6p per mile, or about £1.20 for a complete battery, worked out on a standard tariff of 14p/kWh. Location, time of day and charging speed will all move that figure.
How far will it go on a charge?
On electricity alone the A3 Sportback e-tron covers up to 31 miles (50 km). Driven as a hybrid, total range stretches to around 580 miles. Weather, road conditions, driving style and temperature all pull the electric figure about.
What about performance?
Top speed is 138 mph (222 km/h), 0 to 60 mph takes 7.6 seconds, and the standing quarter mile goes by in 15.8 seconds.
How long does a charge take?
Budget between 2 hours 15 minutes and 3 hours 45 minutes for a full charge. On a standard 3-pin plug at 3kW that becomes 3 to 4 hours. A 7kW home charging point brings it down to 2 to 3 hours. A rapid public charger changes almost nothing, because the maximum rate the car will draw is 3.7 kW.
Why will a bigger cable not help?
The A3 e-tron uses a Type 2 connector and an onboard 3.6 kW charger for AC. That onboard unit is the bottleneck. Connect the car to a fast or rapid point rated well above 3.6 kW and it will still take 3.6 kW, no more.
