MG (now Chinese-owned, formerly British Leyland) is the fastest-growing EV brand in the UK by volume — strong value, V2L on most current models, and Type 2 + CCS standard across the line. The MG4, MG5, ZS EV and Cyberster cover the £25-50k price band that's pulled tens of thousands of UK buyers into EVs.
Connector spec by model
- MG4 EV (2022+) — Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L 2.5kW (smaller than Hyundai/Kia's 3.6kW).
- MG5 EV Estate (2020+) — Type 2 + CCS. 7.4kW AC. V2L on post-2022 facelift.
- MG ZS EV (Mk1, 2019-2021) — Type 2 + CCS. 6.6kW AC. No V2L.
- MG ZS EV (Mk2, 2022+) — Type 2 + CCS. 11kW AC. V2L 2.5kW.

V2L on MG — read the small print
Most current MG EVs support V2L at 2.5kW (10A) — slightly lower than Hyundai/Kia's 3.6kW. Enough for a kettle, lighting, laptop chargers and small fridges, but not two high-draw appliances simultaneously. Worth confirming with your dealer that V2L is enabled in the specific model year and trim before buying an adapter.
The 06/2023 ZS EV V2L recall: we've heard from customers that some 2023 ZS EV deliveries had V2L disabled in software. If you have a 2023 ZS EV and the V2L adapter doesn't activate, contact MG dealer support for a software check before returning the cable.
AC charging speed at home
11kW-capable MGs (MG4, ZS Mk2, S5) charge at 11kW on three-phase or 7.4kW on single-phase. 7.4kW-capable MGs (MG5, Cyberster) cap at 7.4kW regardless of supply.
- 11kW three-phase: ~45 miles/hour. 64kWh battery (MG4 Long Range) in ~5.5 hours.
- 7.4kW single-phase: ~25-30 miles/hour. Same battery overnight in 8-9 hours.
Length recommendations
MG charge ports are typically at the front-left or front-right depending on model. For UK driveways, 7.5m or 10m Type 2 cable covers most layouts.
Smart-tariff integration
iSmart (MG's app) is the weakest of the major UK EV apps for charge scheduling — basic time-window only, no dynamic pricing. For Octopus Intelligent or similar tariffs, pair MG with a smart wallbox — Ohme handles the dynamic pricing logic.
Build quality and what to expect
MG sits at the value end of the market. Their factory cables are functional but not premium — many MG owners upgrade to a heavier-duty aftermarket Type 2 cable for daily use. Worth £40-80 to replace a flimsy supplied cable with one that survives 5+ UK winters.
