EV Charging Sockets & Adapters

EV charging sockets and adapters cover the connector ends — Type 2 socket replacements for tethered chargers, 3-pin to commando converters, Schuko-to-13A travel adapters, and bonded Type 2 inlets for socketed wallbox installs. Every product here meets the relevant IEC connector standard and is rated for continuous EV loads.

For full cables (rather than ends) see our EV charging cable range. For permanent outdoor sockets see outdoor EV sockets. Always check the IP rating — IP44 is fine indoors, IP54+ for outdoor short-term, IP66 for permanent outdoor exposure. Free UK delivery over £50.

EV charging sockets and adapters cover the connector ends — Type 2 socket replacements for tethered chargers, 3-pin to Commando converters, Schuko-to-13A travel adapters, and bonded Type 2 inlets for socketed wallbox installs. Specialist parts for installers and DIY-cable repairs, not the everyday cable / wallbox shopper.

Who this is for

This shelf is mostly for:

  • Installers stocking spare connectors, sockets and adapters for builds and repairs.
  • Wallbox repair — replacement Type 2 inlet on a damaged wallbox or tethered cable.
  • Travel — UK-to-EU Schuko-to-13A adapters, EU-to-UK reverse, and Mode 2 connector swaps.
  • Caravan / second-home conversion — adapter cables to bridge between Type 2, 3-pin, Commando and Schuko ends.

What we stock

  • Type 2 male connector (cable-end) — replacement male Type 2 plug for damaged tethered cables. £40-80.
  • Type 2 female connector (cable-end) — replacement female (car-side) Type 2 plug. £40-80.
  • Type 2 socket / inlet (wallbox-end) — replacement socket for socketed wallbox. £30-60.
  • Type 1 (J1772) male / female / socket — for legacy Type 1 cable repair (Mk1 Leaf, Outlander PHEV Mk1, BMW i3 pre-refresh). £40-80.
  • UK 3-pin to 16A Commando adapter — bridges domestic to industrial outlet. £25-50.
  • UK 3-pin to Schuko (EU 2-pin) adapter — for travelling. £15-30.
  • Schuko to UK 3-pin adapter — for visiting EU EVs in the UK with Schuko granny chargers. £15-30.
  • Type 1 female to Type 2 male adapter — for using Type 1 cars on Type 2 wallboxes. £30-60.

Type 1 to Type 2 converter cable

The most common adapter purchase is a Type 1 to Type 2 converter — for Mk1 Leaf, Outlander PHEV Mk1, first-gen BMW i3 owners who want to use modern Type 2 wallboxes. See our dedicated Type 1 to Type 2 cable range for full-cable products.

UK 3-pin to Commando adapter — what it does

Some EVs (Wottz portable, UltraLite, multi-plug grannies) are sold with Commando blue 16A plug ends, designed for caravan hookups. A 3-pin to Commando adapter lets you plug them into a standard UK 3-pin socket. Caveat: the Commando connector and your charger's circuit board are rated for higher current than a UK 3-pin can sustainably carry — using this adapter on a 3-pin socket means you must throttle the charger to 10A max, never 16A.

Why we don't recommend Schuko-to-UK adapters for daily use

Schuko (continental 2-pin) plugs are physically incompatible with UK 3-pin sockets. Adapters exist and work for emergency / travel use, but the safety case is weaker — Schuko plugs lack the UK earth pin's role in safety switching, and most adapters disable some of that protection. Use Schuko-to-UK only for occasional travel, not daily charging.

Bonded inlets and chassis-mount sockets

For installers building or repairing wallboxes, we stock bonded Type 2 inlet sockets — chassis-mount IP55-rated sockets that fit standard wallbox housings. Used in repairs of socketed wallboxes where the original Type 2 inlet has failed (typically due to water ingress or pin damage).

Connector cleaning

Most "intermittent charging" complaints are dirty connector pins, not failed components. A specialist contact cleaner applied annually keeps Type 2 connectors reliable for 5+ years. Don't replace a pin if a clean fixes it.

Pairing

If you're building / repairing a cable, pair the connector with appropriate cable (4mm² for 32A continuous, 2.5mm² for 16A continuous). We stock raw EV-spec cable by the metre for serious installers — email trade@evcablehub.co.uk.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Yes — we only stock UKCA-marked electrical hardware. Where relevant, products are also CE-marked for EU compliance.
Anything connected to your fixed mains wiring should be installed by a qualified electrician — Part P of the UK Building Regulations is mandatory for electrical work in dwellings.
If this is for an EV charging circuit, yes — BS 7671 (18th Edition) requires Type B RCD protection. Type A and Type AC are not sufficient because EV inverters can produce DC fault currents that A/AC RCDs can't detect.
In-stock items ship same-day if ordered before 16:00 on a working day. Standard delivery is next-working-day across mainland UK. Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and remote Highlands take 2-3 working days. Free delivery on orders over £50.
30-day returns on unused, unregistered items in original packaging. We refund the full purchase price minus original outbound shipping. For items installed or registered to a customer account, only the manufacturer warranty applies.
